A Texas appeals court has scrapped a $26 million verdict against the drugmaker Merck stemming from the first trial involving its once popular painkiller Vioxx.

Everytime I hear about these ridiculous verdicts, I wonder how many people will go unemployed or get sick because pharmaceutical companies have to pay so much to "settle", and not put those same funds toward research into making more and better medicines.

Lawyers like John Edwards and politicians like B. Hussein Obama paint medicine companies as evil corporations, ignoring the advances they've made toward alleviating pain and fighting disease.

Lawyers & liberal politicians lost this case. Good.

“Scumball Lawyers Lose!”

Good news, but they will be back.

Trial lawyers are truly top-of-the-food chain predators, thanks to our sick legal system. A shark in the open ocean can attack REPEATEDLY and fail often but there is NO DOWNSIDE to repeated attempts.

Witness the disgusting tobacco and asbestos farces.

Wow, that’s gonna hurt all the other Vioxx ambulance chasing lawyers, because this is what happened to the FIRST verdict that started out so promisingly for them. It went from $253 million to $26 million to zippo. It’s not supposed to happen that way in law school.

Your average juror cannot grasp the concept that big companies and enormous insurers don’t pay these verdicts, consumers and taxpayers ultimately do. A silky pony can charm them every time.

I would be more than willing to sign any release the drug companies could come up with in order to get Vioxx. Nothing else that they have come up with actually works. Thanks a lot ambulance chasers!

Me too. It was the first drug that worked that didn’t hurt my stomach.

Bring back my Vioxx.

If you’re using or have used, Vioxx for osteo-arthritis, ask your physician about using Celebrex in it’s place. It’s also a COX-2 inhibitor. I have had reasonable success with Celebrex.

Unfortunately Celebrex tears up my stomach.

I managed to take it for all of a month before they banned it. A week in I looked at my honey and said “I feel like myself!”

It has probably cost Merck at least 26 mil to fight this.

What about Celebrex? It’s a COX inhibiter just like Vioxx and Bextra were but it is better on the stomach than Vioxx and is the only one of the three still available.

They put me on Celebrex when Vioxx was pulled, but I was one of the lucky ones that experienced severe dizziness as a side effect. Currently on meloxicam which I would swear does absolutely nothing until I forget to take it, then realize that it must not be too bad. I guess I could just be getting worse so that it just seems that the Vioxx was better that it actually was.
