Deal Imminent between Israel and Hezbollah
Spiegel Online ^ | 5/28/08 | Ulrike Putz

Posted on 05/28/2008 11:00:29 PM PDT by Dawnsblood

According to the well-informed Israeli army radio, Israel has said it is willing to hand over five Lebanese prisoners for the return of Goldwasser and Regev. Israel would also be willing to release the bodies of 10 Hezbollah fighters, it added. The low numbers of prisoners being mentioned in the deal has raised eyebrows in Israel. Many take it to mean that the two soldiers are no longer alive.

From the very moment of the abduction, the Israeli army was convinced that the two men were badly hurt because of the blood stains they found at the site of the attack. In the two years since, Hezbollah has offered no signs of life from the two men.

Common practice, however, dictated that Israel stick to the official line that the two soldiers were still alive. Indeed, when the Israeli government recently threatened to declare Goldwasser and Regev dead, observers saw it as a message to Hezbollah. In Middle Eastern hostage poker, living prisoners are worth more than dead ones. An Israeli statement saying they no longer expected to get the soldiers back alive would have weakened Hezbollah's negotiating position. The message was: This is our last offer.

When the transfer will actually happen remains unclear. Mahmud Komati, a member of the Hezbollah political bureau, told SPIEGEL ONLINE that the standard practice is for Hassan Nasrallah to personally decide the timing.

"Given what Nasrallah recently said," Wazne says, "it could happen very soon." He says it looks as though Hezbollah is willing to accept the current offer, which was made by the German mediator two weeks ago.

15-2, 15 Hezzie terrorists for 2 Israelis. Even if the terrorists or the soldiers are dead, it is not close to a fair deal. Sometimes it is hard supporting our Jewish friends. Why not promise to kill 10 of them a day until the soldiers are released? I sooo do not understand Israeli politics...

I agree. Israel should surrender now and get this over with. The "death by a thousand cuts" charade is a waste of time money, resources and lives.

We can use the new Jewish immigrants to buck up our tech industry, medical and defense industries.

Come on Israeli's, time to pack your bags and come home to Brooklyn.

I was wondering the same thing. I thought there had already been a prisoner release by Israel for him but the muslims didn’t release him.

From a secular POV this is insane because it would mean the greatest imaginable victory of the Islamic enemy. They will hammer one terrorist strike on America after the other. Brooklyn? The enemy made it already to New York... never cede them anything.

Additionally from a religious POV I don't think that the Lord would agree with the idea of the Jews deserting Israel.

Shalit is kept hostage by HAMAS in “palestine”, not Hezbullah in Lebanon.

Normally it's several hundred terrorists for a single Israeli. I believe that the bad guys are demanding 450 terrorists released for the one Israeli soldier who was kidnapped, and I have no doubt, tortured. Real torture, not "waterboarding."

I believe he was taken by Hamas.

I don't know how well Hezbollah & Hamas get on as Hezollah is Shiite and Hamas is Sunni. I'm pretty sure that Mugniyah did meet w/ Hamas, but I think he met w/ al-Qaida too.

“Shalit is kept hostage by HAMAS in “palestine”, not Hezbullah in Lebanon.”

My guess is he is dead too or the Israeli’s would have sniffed him out if he was in Gaza or the West Bank areas that are controlled by the Palestinians. Maybe he is in Sryia or Iran being held.

Yes, I’m aware, but since they’re doing priosoner exchanges and the article doesn’t mention him, I was wondering if anyone had heard about negotiations for him.
