Ancient Greece had a law on the books forbidding the export of figs. It was pretty much ignored and nobody really cared.
However an Athenian desiring to demonstrate his absurd loyalty to the City could therefore find some dastardly figshipper to inform on.
It was understood from the nature of the crime, that the informant was not doing this from a sense of outrage at the crime, but to demonstrate loyalty to the State.
Hence from the Greek words for "figs: and "to reveal", we get the word "Sycophant" (True story)
