Arlington authorities are searching the banks of the Potomac River below the George Washington Parkway for a motorcyclist that may have driven off a cliff.
ABC 7/NewsChannel 8's Scott Thuman reports the GW Parkway is closed in both directions.
United States Park Police are assisting in the search which is centered near the Spout Run Parkway. A park police spokesperson said they got a report that a motorcycle drove off the GW Parkway around 6:15 p.m. near the first overlook.

I pray not.
Prayers sent
Ping.
Going over that cliff has always been my nightmare. I pray the victim is just hidden in the bushes and did not go in the water.
If it’s any comfort to anyone, just now (12:13 a.m.) a helicopter of the type used for medevacs went overhead bat-out-of-hell, on a heading that would put it toward Shock-Trauma. I hope that means someone was found and is still alive, but that is a faint hope now.

The motorcyclist who lost his life Monday night after apparently losing control on the George Washington Parkway and careening off the road has reportedly been identified as a member of The Old Guard.
Twenty-two-year-old Nathan Townsend’s body was found on an embankment about 50 feet from the road just after 6 a.m. Tuesday, about 12 hours after the incident was first reported.
I turned to local DC news to see what had happened and was really so sad to hear of the loss of Nathan Townsend. GW Parkway has become treacherous in recent years. What a devastating loss for his family and the Old Guard family. The Old Guard is such an elite unit, he had to have been a fine soldier. May he rest in peace.
Thank you for the ping.
Show very sad for so many of his loved ones, he had to be a special person.
