HONOLULU - U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, the third most senior member of the Senate, married Irene Hirano in a small private ceremony in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 83-year-old Hawaii Democrat, dressed in a dark suit, and Hirano, who wore a white suit, were wed Saturday at All Saints' Episcopal Church, and then left for Carmel, Calif., for their honeymoon, according to a news release issued by the senator's office.

Inouye's son, Ken, was best man, and Jennifer Hirano served as her mother's maid of honor. The wedding ceremony was limited to members of the immediate families.

Irene Hirano is president and chief executive officer of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.

"This is a glorious day for both Irene and I, as we start a new chapter in our lives," the senator was quoted as saying in the news release.

"Our work keeps us quite busy, but the time we spend together and even our chats on the phone give a special richness to our lives," he said. "I am most fortunate to have as my partner a beautiful, accomplished, intelligent, and worldly woman."

Inouye's wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret, died in 2006 of complications from colon cancer. He was first elected to the Senate in 1962.

Whew! My dear dad was 83 when he died. It causes a very interesting reaction for me to think about him doing that.

Hey Norm! Sun’s out!! Fire’s almost out!

Wow - good for them. I hope can string 3 coherent words together at 83. You’re never too old for love (and sounds like he knows how to make it work).

I too wish the best for Mr. and Mrs. Inouye. I don't agree with a lot of his political viewpoints, but the man served his country nobly and well during his World War II duty.

“May he enjoy many years of enjoyable, long-lasting leis.”

And if one lasts for more than four hours, may he remember to call a doctor.

:)

Wow, good for him and her. I thought he’d passed-on a few years ago. May they have as many good years together, as is possible, at their ages.

Gee, for a minute there I thought "California marriage" meant what "Massachusetts marriage" means.

Good luck to Daniel and Irene.

This would normally be an occasion for “Was it California’s first gay marriage?” wise cracks.

Inouye however, is a genuine WWII “Hero” prosthetic arm, the whole bit, he gave alot for the US, So I will wish him well on his new marriage, 83 is young compared to the Last Doughboy at 107...

That kind of thinking is what is wrong with out country and party. Inouye(pronounced: I annoy you or In no way) was a war hero a half century ago and since then has done everything in his power to socialize this nation. Same can be said of McCain. If you criticize him for anything, and there is plenty to criticize him on, someone points out that he was a war hero. That is not enough.

I wish him well — even if he is a miserable socialist racist.
