I did did hit on a way to attack this issue without being labeled a bigot. Just require that anyone who applies to be a foster parent or to adopt to take a comprehensive std test and turn over their medical records. I think teachers should do the same for that matter. I also think they should have had a clean bill of health on the matter for at least 5 years. I think most people could agree that this is only good for the health and interests of the children. Why this isn’t already the case is puzzling to me.
Adoptive and foster parents are already required to do a comprehensive medical exam in my state. Ours included blood tests and tests for HIV. We are also required to have child abuse criminal background checks. One doesn't walk up to a counter one day and say "I want to be an adoptive/foster parent" and a child is immediately handed over. It's a pretty extensive screening process.
What would that show? When I worked at a doc’s office, we had several gay people as patients - none of them had STDs or AIDS. They pretty much came in for routine checks, or refills of things like cholesterol or BP meds, stuff like that. Surprisingly (or not, depending) there were many heterosexual people that ended up with HPV, herpes and a few other STDs - including several married men whose wives tested negative....
