How many of these kids are so “free-thinking” that they’ll never have a single thought of their own?

Reminds me of one time in my foolish youth when I volunteered to care for children at a macrobiotic weekend retreat. I brought along an Endangered Species coloring book for the kids to use.

One young girl was coloring in the book (inside the lines) when her mother came to get her. The mother came in screaming "No Kylee, you don't have to color inside the lines!" She took the book away from the girl and angrily told me that her children only do free drawings on blank paper!!!!

Even as an aspiring hippie I could see that this forced miltant "free-thinking" was insane. The poor little girl was heartbroken that she couldn't finish her picture. I'm sure the little girl is on a therapist couch today.

I personally find “freethinking”, as used in this article, to be one of the most cynical, Orwellian adjectives in the English language.

Worse than "Bright?"

Not only that, but by working to draw inside the lines the girl was developing hand-eye coordination. It's stuff like this that's the reason we have universities full of kids who think Obama is the Messiah. No critical thinking skills, just group think.

I do hope the girl came out ok despite her mother. The incident seemed to have had a useful effect on you, so something good came of it...

I've come across several self-identified "free-thinkers" on other message boards. My experience has been that its a euphemism for "statist socialist" used generally by the so identified with extreme condescension.

But maybe there are some "free thinkers" out there that actually can think freely and I just haven't run into them.

There was a time when agnostics were people who didn’t know what to believe. Nowadays, most “agnostics” are people who don’t believe in God but don’t want to say they’re atheists.

"Good for them. Much better than attempting to shut down Christian Camps, something I am sure that other atheists have at least thought about doing."

Precisely.

So, you believe that us nonbelievers shouldn’t have ethical systems of our own?

I wonder how the freethinkers would treat a kid who believes that the fullness of truth subsists in the Cathoilc Church? I have my suspicions.
