Kennedy wants his Senate seat given to his wife(dynasty ping!)
hot air ^

Ted Kennedy has made clear to confidants that when his time is up, he wants his Senate seat to stay in the family - with his wife, Vicki. Multiple sources in Massachusetts with close ties to the liberal lion say his wife of 16 years has long been his choice to continue carrying the family flame in the Senate. Kennedy won the seat in 1962; his brother John held it from 1953 to 1960. “There’s no question that he’d like Vicki to continue in his seat,” said one Massachusetts Democrat with ties to the Camelot clan who spoke to Kennedy recently, before his health crisis. “She’s smart, and smart politically.”

Yes. I wrote that somewhere last night too. They wanted the name, the wealth and the power.

Yep. I knew this was how it was going to be when one day they carried him off, and I knew death would be the only thing that removed him from office. The only thing I didn’t know was which relative would take over. Sad. No other family in America has ever recieved such royalty treatment.

Since 'next time' is 2012, this is not an option.

I would assume that if Kennedy dies no more than a year before that election, his wife will end up getting his slot. I very much doubt he is going to give up his seat willingly before his death, and I don't look for anyone to try to force him out.

There is no chance that he could live as long as the election of 2010, so that would be the last date for his replacement to be elected. Naturally no one will try to force him out, what would be the point.

Naturally no one will try to force him out, what would be the point.

If he became unable to fulfill his duties in the Senate, it would be possible that some might put pressure on him to resign so a replacement could be named. They would do so only if it appeared to be politically expedient, of course.

At any rate, I'm not clear on what you are saying. Do you believe there is no chance that Kennedy's wife would be selected/elected to fill his slot?

The only available, qualified Kennedy is Joe, at the moment, and he's running Citizens Energy (He left office to take over after Michael was offed, I think). Patrick has a job.

Citizens Energy is a huge moneymaker for the family. If Joe stepped down, who'd keep that operation going?

Chavez? But he's busy too.

All that money, all those ships going here and there, all that political clout of moving oil around “for charity”.

I think the governor there may go for Vickie. He just appoints her now, and she gets re-elected forever.
