Byrd Offers Weeping Tribute To Kennedy

(The Politico) Sen. Robert C. Byrd has offered perhaps the most emotional outpouring on the Senate floor in years, offering a weeping tribute to "his dear friend, Ted Kennedy."

His voice cracking, hands trembling, Byrd sat in his wheelchair and slowly read his tribute to Kennedy, who has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

"I want to take a moment to say how distraught and terribly shaken I am over the news of my dear friend, my dear, dear friend, Ted Kennedy," Byrd said. "Ted, Ted, my dear friend, I love you, and I miss you."

Byrd broke down even further, mentioning his late wife Erma, who died two years ago after 68 years of marriage to Byrd.

Byrd, 90, is the oldest and longest serving member of the Senate, and Kennedy, 76, is the second longest serving Democrat, and it's clear the men have an emotional and professional connection that dates back nearly five decades.

"I thank God for you, Ted," Byrd intoned.

Byrd took a long pause, and returned to Senate business, quickly asking for a quorum call.

He makes it sound like he was involved in one of those sandwich deals with Ted, without the meat.

He should shed a tear for the men he helped lynch as a recruiter for the KKK.

I want this senile old bigot who STILL USES THE N-WORD put out of MY misery. Who lets this mentally damaged old coot VOTE on OUR future? He has none. He is out of touch. Has no bearing, and certainly is more of a threat as an “old man” than McCain is and McCain (as Reagan’s) age IS a factor in the 2008 election.

And to think liberals refer to the black members of the Bush administration as house n****rs and "uncle toms".

Frankly I’m much more upset that Will Elder died of cancer last week. He was a great American satirist and a wonderful painter and illustrator. Little Annie Fanny may be the most widely seen of his work but his earlier collaborations at Mad with Harvery Kurtzman (his writer on Fanny) helped fuel the whole underground comics movement.

Someone told me that this is because Ted had a long political career. So did Fidel Castro. Should I expect similar praise?

They say this sort of thing always happens in threes.

Maybe well get the trifecta. Kennedy Carter and Byrd.

I don’t know if I can stand one more second of this insane lovefest. The truth is he lived longer than he should have with the abuse he gave to his body. He’s a man in his 70’s...HE’S GOING TO GET SICK...We made these politicians Gods and I’m so, so, so sick of it.

Thank you! I am sick of the boohooing for this person. Look at all the damage he has done. I was shocked when I read about his attempt to subvert Reagan by working with the Russians. By the way, my husband was a doctor-people die.

I’ve been trying to remember an event that involved Kennedy going to the USSR and undermining a US President. Why isn’t anyone talking about that?

Once Teddy gets back to Washington after getting some much needed rest in Cap Cod, he can sit out in the Capital Rotunda for a few days so everyone can file past and pay their respects. C-span2 can cover it.
