bottles of iodine and ammonia?

seriously though, there are many household chemicals you can use to make explosives. i think there is much more to this story.

either that, or prepare for the gubmint to knock on your door if you act like a nail that will not be hammered down.

Yes, Iodine and Ammonia. If I now had the home laboratory I had as a kid I would be deep in jail. I had a very well stocked lab as a kid, through my senior year of high school. One of the compounds I experimented with was an ammonia-iodine complex that was inherently unstable and not very hard to synthesize. I synthesized the compound and collected the resulting crystals. You could take a couple of the the crystals between your fingers and throw them on the floor and they would pop pretty loudly with a small flash. If you had a large enough amount of the stuff you could have created an explosive charge or used it as an initiator for a more explosive compound.
