Quote of the day
Today, Members of the Senate voted unanimously to confirm Justice Steven Agee to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. I appreciate their work on his nomination. Justice Agee is a man of integrity who is respected for his sound legal judgment and commitment to equal justice for all Americans. His work on the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Virginia Court of Appeals demonstrates that his rulings are based on the letter of the law. I am confident that he will serve on the Fourth Circuit with the same level of dedication and professionalism. After I nominated Justice Agee on March 13, 2008, he received a hearing and a confirmation vote in less than three months. Unfortunately, many of my other judicial nominees have not received a timely confirmation process and their nominations have been pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee for significantly longer.
Since the beginning of the 110th Congress, the Senate has only confirmed eight Circuit Court nominees. In the last two years of the past three Administrations, the Senate has confirmed an average of 17 Circuit Court judges. I encourage the Senate to provide all judicial nominees with a swift and fair confirmation process.

With over six years in Washington, Ambassador Kato is the longest-serving postwar Ambassador to the U.S. from Japan. Ambassador Kato's deep commitment to enhancing U.S.-Japan ties was evident in his staunch support for Japanese contributions to coalition efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the barbeque the Katos hosted annually since 2003 for U.S. soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. The President and Mrs. Bush wished the Katos well upon their return to Japan later this month. White House photo by Joyce N. Boghosian

It takes little courage or brains to join the mob vilifying President Bush. But the Democrats (and Republicans, too) depicting him as villain will one day regret it. In the eyes of members of both parties, George W. Bush seems to be the cause of everything from the recent GOP special election losses to a flagging economy to today’s bad weather. Barack Obama plans to reach the White House by claiming the presidency of Sen. John McCain would amount to a third Bush term.

“Add my voice to the chorus of praise. Any man who can stand up to the constant stream of negative press, constant harping and perpetual stream of dissatisfaction aimed his way from every corner of the USA and maintain his sanity, is to be admired, praised, respected, and prayed for. Heartily!! Watching some earlier videos of him, I noticed the deep character lines that have been etched in his face. He has aged well; forged between an anvil and a hammer in a very hot fire!! His wife is a gracious woman, and he praises her. That alone is a sign of his character. How many men do that today? He has given some truly fine speeches, all of which have been undercut, undermined, and backstabbed by the press. His positions have been misrepresented. His character has been assassinated. And he has soldiered on. God bless you Mr. Bush, and God bless your family! You have served incredibly well, and under incredibly trying circumstances to boot! The economy did amazingly well after 9/11 and that is attributable directly to you. I have no doubt that you will hear from your Maker, ‘’well done, good and faithful servant.’’

[Two positive articles about our President — be still my heart!]
HISTORY WILL BE KIND TO GEORGE W BUSH
By Ed Koch
. . . The reason I believe history will redeem President George W. Bush is that he is one of the few leaders on the planet today who understands the larger picture. He has not lost his courage and vision of the future. He knows what calamities await the world if it engages in appeasement and deserts an ally in order to buy an illusory peace. We will recognize his worth long after he is gone.
