If they won’t pump more oil, I see no logical reason as to why we should sell them more coal.
The US is to coal as Saudi Arabia has been to oil, although their three major fields are in decline now. We have a 300 year supply of coal....and we strangle ourselves with ‘foreign and UN entanglements’ and so eschew using our own resource for our own benefit...ditto with oil. Both our parties have agendas different in priority than the voting publics on energy...and, both parties avoid energy issues during election periods.
Providing Saudis with coal, while denying ourselves its use is a possiblilty for the future.
I agree. I have a feeling we will happily sell them our coal with no strings attached....
massive ping....
Obama will probably give it to them.
the sad part is that you are correct. we will give in and sell them our coal. We need to drill for our own oil now or at the least invest in the new fields the Brazilians have discovered and offer a juicy trade deal.
Why not sell them coal? Get some dollars back, build a little inter-dependency...
If our politicians were smart, which theyre not, we would immediately form a coalition of coal producing countries and create an organization called OCEC, Organization of Coal Exporting Countries. Then we would do with coal production and prices exactly what OPEC has been doing with oil.
Perhaps we need to form a OCEC?
CPEC?
Cut food shipments to the arabs for 6 months.
Yours was the first reasonable post on this thread.
Based on the other posts, it would seem that Freepers don't understand the difference between selling something and giving it away.
The United States was blessed by God with two things I’d like to have when things get tough. Food, and coal. Now what happens to countries who only have sand and oil?
One ton of coal has the energy of about 3.6 barrels of crude oil. $140 x 3.6 = $504 Selling coal to them at $500 per ton seems about right. Or say about $100 per ton plus a $400/ton export tariff.
Very astute ping...
Sand and oil and ugly murderous fanaticism. Three things!
U.S. Coal Trade Balance
On the world market, coal sells for about 1/10th of what you’re looking to charge. We wouldn’t sell anything to them, but other countries - like South Africa - would.
Oil has more value than coal, but we should still sell our coal to them. If they’re going to buy coal - or any products - we should do our best to make sure it’s OUR coal they buy. Get our dollars back.
