McCain on the Issues - Border Security and Immigration Reform

Border Security & Immigration Reform

Immigration is one of those challenging issues that touch on many aspects of American life. I have always believed that our border must be secure and that the federal government has utterly failed in its responsibility to ensure that it is secure. If we have learned anything from the recent immigration debate, it is that Americans have little trust that their government will honor a pledge to do the things necessary to make the border secure.

As president, I will secure the border. I will restore the trust Americans should have in the basic competency of their government. A secure border is an essential element of our national security. Tight border security includes not just the entry and exit of people, but also the effective screening of cargo at our ports and other points of entry.

But a secure border will contribute to addressing our immigration problem most effectively if we also:

Recognize the importance of building strong allies in Mexico and Latin America who reject the siren call of authoritarians like Hugo Chavez, support freedom and democracy, and seek strong domestic economies with abundant economic opportunities for their citizens.

Recognize the importance of pro-growth policies -- keeping government spending in check, holding down taxes, and cutting unnecessary regulatory burdens -- so American businesses can hire and pay the best.

Recognize the importance of a flexible labor market to keep employers in business and our economy on top. It should provide skilled Americans and immigrants with opportunity. Our education system should ensure skills for our younger workers, and our retraining and assistance programs for displaced workers must be modernized so they can pursue those opportunities

Recognize the importance of assimilation of our immigrant population, which includes learning English, American history and civics, and respecting the values of a democratic society.

Recognize that America will always be that "shining city upon a hill," a beacon of hope and opportunity for those seeking a better life built on hard work and optimism. Border security and our failed immigration system are more examples of an ailing Washington culture in need of reform to regain the trust of Americans. In too many areas -- from immigration and pork barrel spending to Social Security, health care, energy security and tax relief -- business-as-usual politics prevents addressing the important challenges facing our nation.

With all the bull5h!+ MacCain is now peddling, it's now clear that "The Straight Talk Express" is now on cinder blocks in his front yard.

The fool is really spilling his guts much earlier than I thought he would. Global warming, Comprehensive Immigration Reform, what liberal wouldn't want this man?

"I'm a scorpion," his attacker replied. "It's my nature; it's what I do."

And it's also why MacCain WILL betray conservatism and the people most loyal to him. It's in his nature. He's done it before. He'll do it again.

Agreed. I always start out reasoned but when it is obvious someone has only soundbites to offer and couldn’t put together a cogent argument with a cheat sheet in hand it’s time to get selfish and go directly to the insults and satire.

At that time it is “bread and circuses” as nothing else will impress the booger flicking masses in the cheap seats.

I've been all over the Southwest the last ten years. I talk to hundreds of people. Generally it turns to politics in one form or another. I can recall only twice where illegal immigration came up. The first was a taxi driver in Tucson who was making a killing on trips to Nogales and back.

The second was a week ago when I mentioned that I had to go to Hobbs for a day. A lady asked me where it was and wrinkled her nose when I told her, "I bet they have a bunch of illegals down there". She then went on and on about how Bush had messed everything up.

Maybe the subject is taboo but it doesn't seem to be the first thing on peoples minds.

One thing I have noticed in New Mexico especially is that there is a lot of Bush hatred. I can be eating breakfast in a diner and reading a newspaper and people will walk by, point at the paper and say something like "That Bush is an idiot." I don't know what that means about the body politic, but, boy, it is out there.

Funny, I said I would never respond to you again but here I am I posting another note to one of your utterly stupid comments completely devoid of any kind of logic.

Speaking of stupid and devoid of logic! Whew!

I move on them, but Idon’t bother getting into some kind of racism tit for tat. That's a waste of protein.

Uh huh--sure. You won't post to them but you will smear countless others under this phantom racism that you say exists on FR.

Just last week however, I got a racist Christian Identify Movement advocate rubbed from the face of FR forever.

GOOD! The mods usually do a great job sifting out the trolls. Hence I don't believe there are a bunch of "brown" haters as you allege.

You continuously trying to paint those who oppose McCain's immigration policies as racists only damages FR, IMO.

"I defend the truth. If that is a foreign concept to you, I understand why you post stupid things."

Well. " stupid is as stupid does", Bob.

But it appears to everyone on this thread that you are the one suffering a bad case of it at the moment.

Truth you say?

Who's truth,yours?

Please list any of the mis truths, or mis characterizations of McLame that I have used here as evidence against me, and I will gladly admit as much.

But if by applying critical thinking, you're suggesting we follow your lead by selecting a President based on the fuzzy logic of selecting the Devil you think you know, as opposed to the Devil you suspect, it seems to be an exercise in foolishness, and I won't waste my time considering it.

However I know the truth Bob. And I have been set free!!

But please feel free to vote for the LOUSY RINO till your heart is content. But don't be surprised by the left wing way he'll govern if and when he gets the Presidency.

Which he won't.

“So when will you throw “homophobe” into the mix, Bobbie?’

Weird, you just brought up homo stuff completely out of the blue and ended by referring to me with a female variation of my name...Some might say it was Freudian.

You got something you want to tell us? But don’t get too explicit because I still have to go to church tonight. my priest might not understand.

“Ummmm, where did I insult anyone? Start here.

Stating your opinion as fact and implying that those who disagree with you are not using their “brains” but only acting out of “emotion” or “frustration” is just one theme. There are others—see if you can figure it out. “

Sorry, cowgirl but you seem to be jumping to a false conclusion here. My comments were stated GENERALLY about some people (possibly SOME conservatives)....and it IS a fact that some people tend to allow their emotions to override their brains. I did not insult ‘anyONE’ particular person. There is a difference.

I don’t see any point in continuing what may divide and be negative. This election is going to be crucial.

Tell me, if the McCainiacs and the addlepated GOP want to paint this election as crucial, why the heck would they allow an unacceptable old liberal as the candidate?

Unless MCLame is put to pasture at convention time, the GOP can set itself grazing for the future.

First a car on blocks reference and now a crackpipe.

Dude, you got to do two things ASAP. First, move out of the trailer park and second, get a new screen name because the one you got makes you look like a 12 year old.

I swear I don’t think I know one “adult” person on FR who would even contemplate using the screen name Eric Cartman if only for the reason that NO ONE would take them seriously on any issue that required more intellectual capacity then whether Bud is better than Miller Lite.

Sorry, had to be said.

OH, Now I get it!

As long as you just smear everyone in one fell swoop, it's AOK!

Whatever!

I'll go back to one of my original comments:

I respect your right to have and post YOUR OPINION. Please give others the same courtesy and recognize they may very well DISAGREE WITH YOU.

It’s not just illegal immigration when it comes to mccain, it’s a whole host of issues that will have conservatives refusing to hold their nose for him. In Arizona though the Legislature has been passing all kinds of anti-illegal alien bills recently so they do see it as a problem apparently and every ballot initiative regarding it has also went through.

Maybe they should appoint a couple hundred GOP super delegates and take care of that right away...

Seriously, you can’t be this dumb.
