Bush Faults Democrats for Gas Prices
The Washington Times ^ | May 18, 2008 | Sean Lengell

President Bush yesterday characterized Capitol Hill Democrats as hypocrites for demanding that Saudi Arabia pump more oil while blocking attempts to increase domestic drilling in such places as Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico.

Saudi Arabia announced on Friday that it would meet Mr. Bush's request to increase oil production, though the jump of 300,000 barrels per day was less than the president had wanted.

But rather than criticize the Saudis, Mr. Bush — after a round of meetings with Middle East leaders at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheik — instead heaped blame on congressional Democrats for skyrocketing gasoline prices.

"Those who are screaming the loudest for increased production from Saudi Arabia are the very same people who are fighting the fiercest against domestic exploration, against the development of nuclear power and against expanding refining capacity," said Mr. Bush yesterday after talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

I see so par away all the useless verbiage and emotional rationalizations, the answer is

"Yes, we have no clue what has gone on in Energy Policy for the last 8 years, we just want to an excuse to mindlessly rant at Bush and the GOP".

And while we are giving out facts lets talk about what the President can actually do, giving his limited Executive Branch;
Article. II. - The Executive Branch Note
Section 1 - The President Note1 Note2

The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice-President chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows:

Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

(The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not lie an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves. And they shall make a List of all the Persons voted for, and of the Number of Votes for each; which List they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the Seat of the Government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate. The President of the Senate shall, in the Presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the Certificates, and the Votes shall then be counted. The Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be the President, if such Number be a Majority of the whole Number of Electors appointed; and if there be more than one who have such Majority, and have an equal Number of Votes, then the House of Representatives shall immediately chuse by Ballot one of them for President; and if no Person have a Majority, then from the five highest on the List the said House shall in like Manner chuse the President. But in chusing the President, the Votes shall be taken by States, the Representation from each State having one Vote; a quorum for this Purpose shall consist of a Member or Members from two-thirds of the States, and a Majority of all the States shall be necessary to a Choice. In every Case, after the Choice of the President, the Person having the greatest Number of Votes of the Electors shall be the Vice President. But if there should remain two or more who have equal Votes, the Senate shall chuse from them by Ballot the Vice-President.) (This clause in parentheses was superseded by the 12th Amendment.)

The Congress may determine the Time of chusing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

(In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.) (This clause in parentheses has been modified by the 20th and 25th Amendments.)

The President shall, at stated Times, receive for his Services, a Compensation, which shall neither be increased nor diminished during the Period for which he shall have been elected, and he shall not receive within that Period any other Emolument from the United States, or any of them.

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Section 2 - Civilian Power over Military, Cabinet, Pardon Power, Appointments

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.

He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments.

The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.

Section 3 - State of the Union, Convening Congress

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

Section 4 - Disqualification

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

NOWHERE IN THERE DOES IT SAY HE CONTROLS OIL PRICES, OR 90% of the things he has been blamed for!

VERY FEW PEOPLE ON FR have had a CIVICS CLASS on what branch does what, and what the limited powers of the PRESIDENT ARE...but here it is...the communist/marxist teachers in America have omited teaching the THREE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT, and teach propaganda instead.

I respectfully disagree. FR supported the pubbies and GWB until the Republican Party leadership walked away from conservatives. Indeed Christy Todd Whitman leads a moderate attack that has been quietly taking over the Republican Party for some time. IMHO the turning point on FR was the gang of 14 closely followed by illegal alien amnesty attempt.

There may well be some dim trolls on FR trying to affect us and our vote. The rats are really powerless, the burden of blame lies squarely with the administration and senior party leadership. I was a true believer. For fourty years I have supported Republicans. Great leaders said in effect; Come with me and together we will right the ship of state and make a great future for our country and the world. And I came. Once solidly on the ship of state, the leadership in effect turned, punched me in the face, kneeded me in the groin, and threw me overboard. Siding with the countries enimies (the dims), the people we were "fighting" all that time against, instead of their decades old supporters. No, the people on FR are not the problem, the problem lies with Republican / Conservative leadership. Blame, where blame is due.

"FreeRepublic is now made up of a large portion of democrats here to forward their causes"

Do ya think!

Just bring up Senator Stevens name (the senates BIGGEST champion of ANWR oil) and they come out of the woodwork like the cockroaches that they are. It's all part of the plan for "Change"

That is not so. We have all had that class and it is required. However, it is hard to remember stuff when you are waiting for the bell so you can get out of there before your brains drip out your ears.

Enlighten me as to what the Republicans did to increase the domestic oil supply during their years of control of all three branches of the Federal Government

According to my copy of our Constitution a minority in the Senate of greater than one third can block the will of the majority all they want. Since the Pubbies had less than 60 the RATs have been able to block everything that they have wanted to. Meanwhile the RINOs have joined with the RATs to give them what they want as long as they too got to wallow in the feed trough of ear marks.

I think you make a lot of sense. I could see Reagan taking this by the horns as you’ve described but not Bush anymore.

If he angers the Democrats and sends them over the edge, then he will be doing the right thing. Perhaps Bush, in his legacy, can be remembered as the president that changed our 30 year non-energy policy to a real energy policy. He won’t accomplish this by playing nice with the Democrats. This will only happen if he has the balls to take them on in a down and dirty street fight, so to speak.

You make an excellent proposal. Bush has absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. He's going to be bashed no matter what, so why not launch an all out attack that exposes the Dems for their obstructionist policies of the past? This could be a golden opportunity to galvanize and re-energize a disheartened base.

There were never enough votes to overcome the democratic version of the “filibuster”.

In fact bills to open ANWR would have passed I believe during both the Reagan and Bush I administrations but for fillibusters.

Absolutely. There seem to be many newbies here who are rewriting history when it comes to ANWR. The Republicans, even with the Rinos did not have enough votes to overcome the filibuster.

I’d rather be angry and vocal about the opposition than to have silent anger over a president that’s supposed to be on my side but is not. I can’t imagine having the ability to post constantly against McCain in a year. Lots of people are going to either have to stay quiet, or complain and be banned.

GWB may be “on to something” here, but the hapless American people have already tuned him out — three years ago!

I think Americans and those who back Bush and the Republicans need to contemplate the following chart of US government debt.

The estimated cost of a nuclear power plant (with elevated commodities and dropping dollar) is $3B. $3T would have bought 1000 nuclear power plants and would give us true energy independence. Of course we could not build 1000 plants in 6 years, but based on previous patterns of construction we could be well on our way to another 100 at a mere 10% of that accumulated debt, all in.

George and the pubbies need to get out a mirror.

I think W is well positioned to put blame on Congress. He can do McCaine a service by attacking the Dems.

Unfortunately, free market capitalism should be on the endangered species list instead of polar bears.
