President Bush yesterday characterized Capitol Hill Democrats as hypocrites for demanding that Saudi Arabia pump more oil while blocking attempts to increase domestic drilling in such places as Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico.
Saudi Arabia announced on Friday that it would meet Mr. Bush's request to increase oil production, though the jump of 300,000 barrels per day was less than the president had wanted.
But rather than criticize the Saudis, Mr. Bush — after a round of meetings with Middle East leaders at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheik — instead heaped blame on congressional Democrats for skyrocketing gasoline prices.
"Those who are screaming the loudest for increased production from Saudi Arabia are the very same people who are fighting the fiercest against domestic exploration, against the development of nuclear power and against expanding refining capacity," said Mr. Bush yesterday after talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Thank you for stating this. I have found that they also manipulate the moderators if you point out that they are “operatives”. This is becoming more of an issue as we get closer to the election. I am keeping a list at the moment of the worst offenders with their posting history.

True, but increasing oil supply is a multi-year proposition. If Congress, and yes the Demos were filibustering, had made the right decision 10 years ago, ANWR would be on-line now.
You’re absolutely right about the time needed to bring new production on-line, but I could add that we should have started 20 or 30 years ago. Nonetheless, shall we start now, or wait until 2018 when oil is $300/barrel, and look back and say we should have done something in 2008? Even though any new exploration will not come on line for 5 years or more, just the physiological effect to the world market that the U.S. is gearing up to take care of themselves, and break the back of the oil despots, and could bring down the price immediately. But, we would need the resolve to develop our domestic resources, even if the currently producing countries drop the price to discourage us from going forward. And, all the while we could be working on conservation and energy alternatives.
That is true. They've also prevented the building of refineries, drilling for oil in various locations, and building coal-fired power plants in many locations. The government is the problem, the market is the answer.

Martinez has always been quite proud of his efforts to block offshore drilling, and has been become the darling of Florida environmentalists. (Jeb Bush opposed drilling up to 2005 and then tried to appear neutral in 2006). When the senate managed to pass an amendment to the (later defeated) 2005 drilling bill that mandated an inventory of the offshore areas, Martinez said the following:
"Why would we inventory an area where we are never going to drill?'' said Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., who with Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., led the opposition. "The inventory is a huge problem for Florida. It tantalizes pro-drilling interests. It's like saying to pro-drilling states, 'Come and get it.' '' (Source)
This is the sort of politics that led to the 2006 drubbing of Republicans. After that election, a 2007 House drilling bill couldn't even get out of committee. Yes the Dems are awful on this issue, but let's be honest: if it weren't for the efforts of key Republicans like Martinez, we had a good chance of opening up offshore drilling when we had the majority in the house and a slim majority in the Senate.
"Yes, we have no clue what has gone on in Energy Policy for the last 8 years, we just want to an excuse to mindlessly rant at Bush and the GOP".
Translation: "Anybody that disagrees with me, and doesn't kiss the backside of the present-day left-leaning GOP will be denigrated, and I will bash them and their opinions every chance I get."
Sounds a little like a Clinton tactic to me.
The bottom line is that this country hasn't had an energy policy for far longer than 8 years. What we've had is a knee-jerk environmental policy that has repeatedly been used to stop all forms of progress in terms of development in energy. The best energy policy we can have is for the government to remove it's heavy regulatory hand off the throats of those in the energy sector. Let the market work for the solution to today's problem can only be solved by the market.

GWB, sorry to say, is just as much to blame for the energy crisis as the RATS. As President he could and should have declared an national emergency and ordered drilling in ANWR and off the continental shelfs,with these gas prices the people would have supported him. After all we are at war!! What is the response from Bush’s administration; declare that polar bears are an endangered species, making it that more difficult to drill in ANWR, that “pristine land” as McCain would say.

I only post preelection and through the election, and moniter occasionaly afterwards...so when you aren’t regular for a long time, and then return..WHAM it’s so obvious.

It should be obvious. Since retirement I have gone into town once a week at most for shopping to top off my Y2K and gas tank and the changes are glaringly apparent from week to week that wouldn't be so obvious day to day.
The most I can come up with is E85 but thats a fuel but not crude............
