I feel bad for the kid. He may not have been properly trained (or got sloppy) on how to end up in a defensive position after throwing a pitch. You've got follow the pitch all the way in and off the bat, set yourself with your glove in front of your body at chest level, and expect a screaming line drive right back at you every time you throw the ball.
I've had a few close calls, and all I do is slow pitch. But a big guy with a killer metal bat that knows how to hit can rip your head off.

I heard a discussion of this in the news yesterday. On the one hand, the bats do drive a ball much faster. On the other hand, little leagues will sometimes mix boys of widely different maturational levels.
A league that goes 13-15, for example, would have everything for boy to man body types.

Especially if certain teams were using “ringers” as recent scandals would remind us...

Good point.
Bats don’t kill boys, boys kill boys.
You won’t get my bat until you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

“Why dont the parents sue themselves for letting the child play baseball?”
Great quote that can be applied to so many situations.
I have a few articles on liability law that address some of these issues. http://www.ryderlaw.com
