HYANNIS -- U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital this morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport.
Hyannis fire responded to the compound after a call was made around 8:30 a.m. It's unclear what Kennedy's medical condition is, but after he spent almost two hours in the emergency room a decision was made to transfer him to Mass General Hospital in Boston.
Kennedy, 76, was placed on a stretcher and wheeled out to the MedFlight helicopter around 10:15 a.m. where it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport.
The Kennedy family is preparing to host the annual Best Buddies Challenge event in Hyannisport this afternoon, which is a fund-raiser for the organization. Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and helps people with intellectual disabilities.
Hundreds are expected to participate in the event, which kicked off this morning with a 100-mile bicycle ride from the Kennedy Library in Boston to Hyannisport.
A concert at the Kennedy compound is scheduled for tonight.
Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-three years.
He was elected in 1962 to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.
Since then, Kennedy has been re-elected to seven full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.
Mod Note: We're watching this thread and are more than happy to hand out suspensions
Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said Monday that Bush’s comments and Cheney’s lobbying effort “only demonstrate that the White House learned nothing from Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.” Kennedy said that the administration’s “legal justifications for harsh techniques ... only make the war on terrorism harder to win and put our soldiers in further danger.
What happened to, “The hospital is making a statement in a few minutes”? That was almost an hour ago.
Yes, but it was just the talking head. Take it with a grain of salt. They really know extremely little at this point.
Well....they CAN be deadly...and having two in a row like that...
CNN: Sources close to family are “guardedly optimistic”, saying Kennedy made a phone call to cancel a scheduled luncheon after going to the hospital. CNN calling it a “seizure” and not a stroke.
Not reported on CNN: Some believe it is possible that Kennedy might have simply drank waaaayyy too much last night and got one of those bad bad hangovers with a serious case of the shakes.
When your name is Kennedy in Massachusetts, yes, you CAN stop time.
I agree, PM.
The moderators have to pull posts or FR looks like a bunch of insensitive louts. At the same time, this is one man who will not be granted much sympathy by a huge number of conservatives.
It’s best simply to post the article and immediately lock the thread before any comments can be made. I’d pull this one and start over. All the deletions look like a patchwork quilt. You’re left thinking, “Gosh how they disdained this man.”
It beats pullinig the thread because of the actions of ONE.
..we're all a bit emotional today.
I'm not. I'm lying on my back feeling quite relaxed.
Really? That’s what I get for living in the midwest, I’ve never head that before! ;-)
Repress the speech of all because of a few louts, in the name of keeping up appearances?
Are you sure you’re a conservative?
Yeah, but “far more serious than a stroke?”
Guy sounds so ignorant, he should keep his trap shut.
Time and place.
Sheesh.
I did.
Well, suspend away, but I doubt it, even for Cyber Liberty on a Saturday morning...
We may all disagree with the man, bitterly at times, but when he's toes up in a hospital fighting for his life, then he gets nothing but my best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
So there. :^)
Just not here. See you tomorrow. I've been more than patient with you, and the other posters are right. It's unfair to them to have you force a thread lock because you're too bull-headed to understand that FR has the right to set basic standards.
I don’t know, Blogger...I’m NOT a doctor. All I know is they can be deadly, yet treatable.
Ditto that with strokes.
I think I’ll slither on away from the computer now.
Ha!
Agreed...those type of emotions are really sick and tasteless. No matter what I think of Mr Kennedy, I do not wish harm....
Geez....?????
I'll bet I hardly ever have any spelling errors. I won't ask what you think of content!
Strokes ain’t funny. Wish I could say I want him and his mean spirit around a long time more. I wonder if he is laying there and thinking about the mother of his children that he also treated like dirt?
I hope if he doesn’t make it he gets a good burial in a trunk by a bridge in Chappaquidick.
Funny how life is, we do not live forever.
