Communism would no longer be a firing offense under bill

California Senate on Thursday passed legislation that would delete membership in the Communist Party as a reason for firing a public employee, a Cold War-era prohibition intended to root out communists.

Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, called communism a "failed system" and said his bill – Senate Bill 1322 – was intended to protect "the constitutional freedoms that we have fought so valiantly for," including freedom of political affiliation.

California is the only state that allows public employees to be dismissed for membership in a political party.

In addition, current law requires that any organization that applies to use a public school facility can be asked to sign a statement that "the applicant is not a communist action organization or a communist front."

"SB 1322 seeks to protect the rights of free speech and political affiliation by repealing the no-longer-necessary statute from the books," Lowenthal said.

The bill, he said, would "still allow employees to be fired for any activity to overthrow the state or federal government."

The legislation, which will now be considered by the Assembly, was approved on a 24-15 vote, with Democrats in support and Republicans opposed.

Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Atwater, warned "the Communist Party is not a dead organization … and (is) actively repressing human beings in Cuba and China in brutal ways.

I guess the voters in California don’t have a say in this … sorta like the Gay marriage thingy.

Guess they’ll now add a clearly visible Yellow Hammer and Cycle to the Red Star already in the State Flag.

Communism isn’t a political affiliation. It’s a belief system which is bent upon destroying the United States and any other capitalist society. It teaches subversion and deception, with an end to gaining power and then never giving it up.

Elect a communist as President, and you may never have another free election.

Putting these people in positions of authority is suicide.

Half of every graduating class graduates at the bottom. They need jobs too and we elect them to office.

They collectively do not have the knowledge or spine to do what is necessary to fix the problems Those that do, are hounded out of office by the rest of the losers of life's lottery.

How come I knew when reading the title that it would be a Demoncrat introducing the bill. As if their are not more pressing matters to deal with in Calli-for-nia.

Is this an unwitting admittance that today’s democrat party is a failed system?

Or was he just being very specific to say “communism is a failed system” but not saying SOCIALISM is a failed system?

Remember, socialism was the system (process) that would ultimately lead to a pure communist system. The joke is that socialism would be around forever, because it is impossible to acieve pure communism.

Which people? California? Or the other 49 states? Unless I misread this it says California is simply coming into line with the other 49 states.

"California is the only state that allows public employees to be dismissed for membership in a political party.
