TORONTO, Ontario, May 16, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Ontarios health insurance plan will pay for sex-change operations for the first time in a decade, Health Minister George Smitherman confirmed yesterday
"(It would) probably affect between eight and 10 people in Ontario, who after having very, very sustained psychological evaluations would be deemed by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health as appropriate candidates to receive a surgical intervention," Smitherman speculated.
Ontario began covering the bill for sex-change operations in 1971, but ceased doing so in 1998 under the Progressive Conservative government.
In 2006, the Ontario Human Rights Commission required compensation for three patients midway through preparation for sex-change surgery during the 1998 insurance plan change.
The Centre Metropolitain de Chirurgie Plastique, a private hospital in Montreal, has already been offering sex-change procedures to patients for $17 thousand.
The Health Minister added yesterday that he would give more details about funding for sex-change operations in a few weeks when discussing funding plans for the provinces health-care services.
Smitherman, appointed Health Minister in 2003 by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, is an openly active homosexual, infamous for advancing sexually permissive social policies.
While many psychiatrists have promoted sex-change operations based upon the notion that gender is a cultural construct distinct from ones genetically determined sex, other prominent psychiatrists have rejected the prudence of so-called sex-change operations.
After he became Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Johns Hopkins University, Paul McHugh found that sex-change operations failed to solve patients difficulties with relationships, work, or emotions.
In his First Things article, Surgical Sex, McHugh recounts finding the transgendered participants in sex-change operations unpersuasive evidence for the surgerys effectiveness.
The post-surgical subjects struck me as caricatures of women. They wore high heels, copious makeup, and flamboyant clothing; they spoke about how they found themselves able to give vent to their natural inclinations for peace, domesticity, and gentleness--but their large hands, prominent Adam's apples, and thick facial features were incongruous (and would become more so as they aged).
Women psychiatrists whom I sent to talk with them would intuitively see through the disguise and the exaggerated postures. Gals know gals, one said to me, and that's a guy.
Following his extensive research into the sex-change phenomena, McHugh ended sex-change operations at John Hopkins and has encouraged other facilities to do the same.
I concluded that Hopkins was fundamentally cooperating with a mental illness. We psychiatrists, I thought, would do better to concentrate on trying to fix their minds and not their genitalia.

I have news for you. It’s not news to most people, but you’re an exception. Having her breasts removed did not turn your sister into a man.
Why on Earth would I apologize?
Would you associate abortion with cancer surgery? If not why not?

Yes, key word being “want”, and in the context of this article about sex-change operations that’s obviously not talking about breast cancer patients who are sometimes forced to have stuff removed.
bump
Hey newbie, if you are going to use a FReeper’s name in a post, it is courtesy to ping them.
I am sorry if you consider a radical mastectomy due to breast cancer “mutilation” because the rest of the world DOES NOT. For the record, I have an aunt and a grandmother who have had mastectomies, I DO NOT think they have “mutilated” themselves.
LOL
Um, this isn’t about cancer treatment. This is about Mr James Smith going to the hospital to be castrated, have a cavity dug into his pelvis, have his penis torn apart and molded into the cavity, receive breast implants, get shot up full of female hormones, leave the hospital, get his name changed to Jamie, and then ask the taxpayer to pay the bill for the whole deal.
>> “ but their large hands, prominent Adam’s apples “
The ‘mutilation’ here would be that of males chopping the stock.
There’s no one here that would jeer, mock, or otherwise insult someone who suffers from breast cancer. Sorry to hear about your sister’s suffering. Many of us here are in one way or another affected by this form of cancer.
Purpleraine, did your sister have necessary surgery due to cancer or risk thereof, or did she have voluntary surgery to change her gender appearance? This thread is about the latter, not the former. Please explain your objection since it is so vehement. No one was talking about cancer, did you misunderstand. Wagglebee is good people in my book.
Thank you for the polite mannerly response. I knew someone here had it in them.
Thank you for your kind words.
You can tell me all you want about your aunt and grandmother. If you don't think women consider that a mutilation you're just continuing your ignorance. You need to go to the breasr cancer support groups and have some sensitivity modeled for you.
See how simple things would be and how much of this back and forth would have been avoided with a simple, I'm sorry.
I said she had cancer, did you read my comments.
How is this not cosmetic surgery? I’ve never really liked my schnozz; will they fix that for free? P.S. You can’t change your sex through surgery, only your appearance. It is male or female, XY or XX, except in very rare cases of genetic abnormality - but that’s not what we’re talking about here.
Did you READ what I wrote in my first post? If people want to mutilate their bodies then they should have to pay for it.
The word "want" modifies the verb "to mutilate", this indicates a DESIRE in the matter. ANY person who has to have ANY part of their body removed due to cancer, by definition, DOES NOT desire their condition. And I DO NOT consider this to be mutilation.
See how simple things would be and how much of this back and forth would have been avoided with a simple, I'm sorry.
If ANYONE should apologize, it's YOU.
Once again, it is considered SIMPLE COURTESY to ping another FReeper when you are openly talking about them.
When cancer is eating your body you WILL WANT to mutilate it. Most people will chose to do what the need to do WANTING to stop the cancer and live. You may even cut off the other breast when you don't have to or before it's needed.
I'll just consider your response more ignorance.
I really can't stand to respond to your other post. I've had enough of your rudeness.
