Message of hate: a council worker cleaning anti-Israel graffiti off a wall in Stamford Hill

London's Jewish community has been targeted by a wave of anti-Semitic graffiti.

Residents were today warned to look out for suspicious activity following the racist attack in north-east London.

Vandals sprayed shops, pavements and walls outside four synagogues in Clapton Common and Stamford Hill on Tuesday night. Worshippers were yesterday confronted with slogans such as "Jihad to Israel" and "Jihad to Tel Aviv".

Hackney council is removing the graffiti, which consisted of 40 pieces of writing.

David Greenwald, 20, who visits the Chasidey Belz Beth Hemedrash synagogue in Clapton Common, said the close-knit community was shocked.

"This morning I went to synagogue to pray and saw the writing all over everywhere - walls, shops, traffic lights," he said. "Everyone feels scared. Here we do not have any problem with Arabs - there has never been anything like this before, but now we are worried."

Another worshipper said: "It makes us feel that we are in exile. It could be kids doing it but even so, it shows something." The other synagogues were Satmar Beth Hamedrash Yetev Lev, Atereth Zvi Beth Hamedrash, and the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations. Yesterday further racist graffiti appeared in Bethnal Green.

A spokesman for the Community Security Trust, an organisation which looks after the safety of British Jews, said: "We are already on a relatively high state of alert due to pronouncements by pro-al Qaeda supporters relating to attacks on Jews, and this adds to the picture of threat." Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, said: "Hackney is a tolerant place and we've never seen anything like this before. Our graffiti removal teams are working with the police to remove it as quickly as possible to minimise any further distress."

Scotland Yard said officers were looking at CCTV footage and forensic teams have recovered a canister of spray paint. Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

you numbskull

Thank you so very much for your congenial, thoughtful, friendly and gracious remarks.

Paying careful attention to punctuation and the use of words here is key.

When I said an "underground railroad" of sorts I used TWO clues to alert truly thoughtful readers that I was only drawing an extremely loose analogy....the quotation marks surrounding the worlds "underground railroad" as well as the phrase "of sorts".

An "underground railroad of sorts" could be anything from people knowledgeable in immigration law and / or attorneys practicing in that field providing special services targeting Jewish families to any of a million other services, none of which would suggest a similar situation as what existed in Nazi Germany.

Churchill is probably rolling over in his grave. Any minute I expect Charles and Camilla to do the muzzing thing and hit the floor facing demon-city mecca and tilt their sorry posteriors in the air. Jeeze, Britain as a society and nation (though not their military) has gone down the tubes since Thatcher left the P.M. slot.

No hope that we could help arm the Jews in England. No one is allowed to have weapons, except for the Muslims in their ghettos, where the police no longer go.

I have cousins in England, and have always loved the country. But I think something went bad there some time ago. Winston Churchill was a great leader, but there was something wrong even back then, which is suggested by the rapidity with which they threw him out of office as soon as the war ended.

I’m afraid that Evelyn Waugh gets it right in his “Sword of Honour Trilogy.” Things were already starting to go bad.

That makes me sad for some reason.

However, I do kind of like Chuckie in the grand poobah outfit and camelia in the wardrobe from wind and the lion.

Chuckie and Camillia look like extras from the early 60s movie “Lawrence of Arabia.”

Jews don’t need any assistance if they want to leave Britain. Israel as I understand takes all jews without condition or prejudice. Any Jews who feel that living in Britain is barely a step up from living in the Warsaw Ghetto are free to f*** off to the holy land any time they want.
Oddly though, most don’t seem to be under the impression that things are so bad in Britain that they would be better off taking their chances with Palestinian suicide bombers than suffering the risk of an occasional graffiti attack on their place of worship....

Now that that myth has been debunked, I would also like to debunk the myth that guns are ‘banned’ in the UK, they are not. If you have no criminal record or history of mental illness, you can own a rifle or shotgun fairly easily...

That makes me sad for some reason.

Another thing which may evoke a similar response is the text of the linked Times article itself, which culminates in this sentence:

The royal party then departed for Istanbul, deaf to the sounds of a beautiful call to prayer.

This rather breathtaking sentence begs numerous questions and comments, among them:

Speaking for myself at least, I have yet to hear a "call to prayer" that I would ever consider even remotely beautiful....they are much more like a reminder of the essential, legendary novel and film adaptation of H.G. Wells'  "The Time Machine" in which the remaining humans in a futuristic Earth are called to their doom by the monsters who have become their overlords.

Those dead ducks will be all Americans along with our children and grandchildren’s futures. Our enemies are laughing and waiting to strike. I have no doubt, whatsoever, that day is near. After all, we have a terrorist sympathizer running for POTUS; our forefathers are turning in their graves!

Unfortunately, some organizations are of the opinion that it is better to keep these kinds of acts and attacks quiet so that more are not inspired.

It's also quite convenient that the underreporting and the outright covering up of antisemitic acts is aligned with the personal agenda and worldview of so many 'reporters' and 'news'papers.....violence and crimes against Jews isn't a crime, after all, when you regard the victim as subhuman to begin with......

“Satmar Beth Hamedrash Yetev Lev...”

The Satmars are famously anti-Zionist; if that’s a Satmar Synagogue, it’s particularly ironic.

Indeed it is...I hadn't been aware of that; thanks very much for bringing that essential information to the thread.

Among other things, it illustrates a breathtaking lack of mental acuity on the part of the Islamofascist trash.

Utter barbarians in every sense of the word.

No hope that we could help arm the Jews in England. No one is allowed to have weapons, except for the Muslims in their ghettos, where the police no longer go.

Particularly when there is such breathtaking ignorance as to what constitutes being 'effectively' armed to the point of your arms being useful in the cause of self-protection....there is even the notion, brought forth by some, that being allowed, under severe scrutiny, to own a long gun is being adequately 'armed' in Great Britain.   When Britons can go to a public gun show, plop down a wad of cash and bring home a Desert Eagle and ten thousand rounds of ammunition I will begin to stop worrying about their ability to exercise what we "backward Yanks" consider to be ordinary freedoms.

I have cousins in England, and have always loved the country. But I think something went bad there some time ago. Winston Churchill was a great leader, but there was something wrong even back then, which is suggested by the rapidity with which they threw him out of office as soon as the war ended.

The contemptible treatment of Sir Winston in modern times suggests that there is no great rush to change direction, either:

Churchill dropped from England's history syllabus ( pandering to a P.C. agenda)

Great Britain Fury at Churchill statue (Former PM and beloved hero is in a straightjacket)

I’m afraid that Evelyn Waugh gets it right in his “Sword of Honour Trilogy.” Things were already starting to go bad.

It appears to be quite an impressive work...I will have to look into it.  Thanks very much for the recommendation.

Hmmm. So a pistol can be bought by any sane, law-abiding Briton?

And what about concealed-carry laws? With the level of vermin running around the Tube in London, a concealed pistol is almost a necessity.

Yes. I have read all of Waugh’s other novels, some of them many times, and I especially love Brideshead Revisited and, among the satirical novels, A Handful of Dust.

I came to the Sword of Honour trilogy late, because the critics don’t often mention it, but I think it’s really an extraordinary work. I suspect they don’t like Waugh’s politics.

P.S. I would buy the separate editions of the three novels, if you can get them. The Little, Brown editions rather than Everyman. I notice that one of the reviewers at Amazon agrees with me on that.

I think it’s really an extraordinary work. I suspect they don’t like Waugh’s politics.

A common issue in all arenas of artistic and literary endeavor where the artist or writer doesn't clearly espouse a hard-left or at least socialist-sympathetic line.  Those who place themselves in a position of judging others' work and take great pains to bleat on about how refined and worldly their perspective is are often the narrowest and most childish of thinkers when all is said and done.  At least you found it, which I wouldn't have done at all had it not been for your kind assistance.

Thank you  :-)

The Little, Brown editions rather than Everyman.

I will be sure to make that essential distinction.

I'm noticing that there are also film adaptations available...I'll have to look into those as well, bit after I've read the books....I'm one of those "the book is almost always better" types, and I don't want some slapdash celluloid travesty to spoil the magic of a fine book.
