McGreevey Says He's 'Financially Crippled;' Can't Pay Alimony

ELIZABETH, N.J. -- The nation's first openly gay governor was back in court Thursday, testifying for a second day as he tries to convince a judge he is too poor to pay alimony to his estranged wife.

Former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey testified Wednesday that he has limited income, few assets and significant debts. He said he is all but unemployable because of the gay sex scandal that toppled his administration and ongoing publicity in his messy divorce.

"Because of this case, I have been financially crippled," McGreevey told the judge.

McGreevey, 50, stepped down 13 months before his first term was to end, announcing in a nationally televised speech that he was "a gay American." He said he had an affair with a male staffer while married to Dina Matos McGreevey. The staffer denies the affair and says he was sexually harassed by the governor.

Now an Episcopal seminary student, McGreevey said he owes a prior divorce lawyer at least $116,000 and has not paid his first ex-wife any child support this year. He said he relies on boyfriend Mark O'Donnell to pay legal bills and lifestyle expenses. He lives in a house owned by O'Donnell and said he owes O'Donnell money.

Matos McGreevey wants alimony, and is asking the judge to base the payments, at least in part, on McGreevey's "marital conduct," including his alleged adulterous gay relationship.

McGreevey lawyer Stephen Haller said the couple's "short-term marriage" does not qualify for her for alimony. They split in 2004 after four years of marriage.

Matos McGreevey, 41, is a hospital executive, but she is slated to lose her job next month when the hospital closes.

Her lawyer, John Post, accused McGreevey of underestimating his earning potential.

The judge said employment expert Donna Kolsky will testify Thursday afternoon. She is expected to testify that McGreevey could earn a maximum of $118,000 from teaching and consulting. Matos McGreevey earns about $82,000 a year at the hospital.

The couple is fighting over alimony, child support, and how to divide their assets and liabilities. They have agreed on custody of their only child, 6-year-old Jacqueline.

Matos McGreevey is asking the court to award her alimony and additional money based on the contention that McGreevey committed marriage fraud. She says she was duped into marriage by a gay man who needed the cover of a wife to advance his political career.

McGreevey says his wife should have known he was gay.

Why doesn't he just go pimp himself outside some highway rest stop?

A Prayer for Larry Craig
By [former NJ governor] James E. McGreevey
Monday, September 3, 2007; A15
Washington Post

My gut wrenched when I read of Sen. Larry Craig's bathroom arrest. I remembered my own late-night encounter with the law at a Garden State Parkway rest stop following a political dinner in north Jersey.

I pulled into the rest stop, parked my car, flashed my headlights, which was "the signal," and waited. Glancing in my rearview mirror, I saw a state trooper approaching. I desperately tried to convince the trooper of my innocence, showing him my former prosecutor's badge, a gift from the office when I left. The trooper radioed his office and returned. "I never want to see you here again," he said. I survived for another day.

Now an Episcopal seminary student

Good grief. And they let him in? It's one thing to repent your ways and reform, but there's no perceptible sign that he has reformed. He's still living with his boyfriend.

I guess he's lining himself up to be the next Bishop of New Hampshire--or New Jersey.

“She makes $82,000 a year. Plus, any money that could have gone to the child, she made him spend in legal bills.”

What are you implying, here?

Yeah, what a bitch.

The anger toward women expressed on this board is breathtaking.

Now an Episcopal seminary student, McGreevey said

So many topics in one article, but this one worries me the most. I can't imagine what this seminary is teaching ... and glossing over ... that allows McGreevey to continue believing that he has been called by God to serve as a spiritual guide to others. I don't have the arrogance to claim perfection in my life, but neither do I have the arrogance to claim that my flaws are actually virtuous.

A man is not automatically disqualified for ministry by lust, pride, anger, greed, homosexual inclinations, or even adultery. He is, however, disqualified by taking the position that "I want what I want, and if the Bible disagrees then God was wrong." The Bible, in the original languages, is completely clear on homosexuality, and someone who doesn't believe the Bible is the word of God has no business in any form of ministry work.

From article:

I won't ponder what the hell "lifestyle expenses" entail.

Maybe he could wait in men’s restrooms along the garden state parkway and collect “donations”!

Unemployable? Methinks he’s just not trying hard enough. Surely there is some rich old widow (late 60s+) looking for “companionship” and would be willing to keep an ex-NJ govenor. McGreevey can just close his eyes and pretend.

Some posters have suggested employment at McDonalds. But, frankly, that’s not fair to fans of the special sauce.

The anger is "breathaking", is it? And yet you're still here...strange.

First of all, don't you think you're projecting a bit? Second, where was the anger in his comment? He's questioning the whole alimony racket. She makes 82 grand a year. Plus, I thought a man's earnings were his own? Isn't confiscating them and giving them to some woman and calling it "alimony" a massive violation of property rights? Why should he support her a--? Child support of course is another matter. But this article is talking about alimony.

Its both.

The current ex wants alimony.
The previous ex has not been paid her child support.

That is so wrong asking for alimony when you are making $82,000/year.

But the former governor... well is he doing anything right?

Finally, some semblance of justice.

Does ANYONE ever read the article? It plainly says she is slated to lose her job soon as the hospital is shutting down.

why the need for alimony? Equality and all. Child support is different, but why pay her? She has a job and he isn’t a milionaire

Ah yes, the rewards of obsessing on feces and sex in filthy public restrooms with other deviants does have its justification.
