NORTH BEND, Wash. - John McCain on Tuesday cast Democratic rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton as latecomers to the environmental battle, saying he would be willing to debate the issue with either of them in the general election to underscore his experience with the issue.
"People will trust my stewardship not only because of my background and knowledge, but also my vision for the future," he told reporters during a news conference at a nature center in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains.
"They have never, to my knowledge, been involved in legislation nor hearings nor engagement on this issue."
McCain cited his travels to global warming hot spots, as well as his work in his home state of Arizona with American Indians, who control broad swaths of property.
He also said the Democrats' plan to auction greenhouse gas emission permits - rather than giving them away, as he proposes - would lead to higher prices for consumers.
"My proposal is doable," said McCain. On Monday, he had sketched out his action plan for global warming.
"You can dictate a lot of things, but you have to unleash the innovative power and entrepreneurship of America in order to achieve these goals," he said.
McCain proposes to cut greenhouse gas emissions 60 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Obama and Clinton have committed to an 80 percent cut in emissions by 2050, a level favored by many scientists.
"While Barack Obama has brought Republicans and Democrats together around plans to raise our fuel standards and invest in renewable energy, John McCain's `long history' involves opposing countless measures to invest in renewable fuels and alternative energy technology," said Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan.
Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said: "Sen. McCain is welcome to rewrite history if he likes, but the reality is that Senator Clinton has been very active on the issue of climate change. She's even traveled with Sen. McCain a few times on trips that dealt with the issue."
You sound like someone else who used to toot the Rino horn here.
any way you cut it, we all lose no matter who wins.. crossover voters from the dems made sure of that.
you may not like hearing it but you along with a lot of others will have to endure it... but go ahead, render support to a man who sought to rein in others freedom of sppech, openly insults those who disagree with his stance on immigration and torture policies, Yeah, tell me all about our options.
Have a good one.
It sounds crazy at first, and horribly cynical, doesn't it? But then all that evidence keeps piling up...
Rohrabacher was just on CSPAN a little while ago (on the House Floor) making a long speech about this Global Warming nonsense. He made a lot of good points (not much new, but one more person exposing the alarmists can’t hurt).
Hopefully, the lack of warming that we are seeing will see this scam unravel before too much damage has been done. Congress has already spent billions to pay for studies selling it. Despite all that propaganda, it seems more and more people are waking up. One can only hope that the people will tell these scamsters to get a one way ticket to Mars.
So, you wouldn't have a problem setting a "reasonable" limit on other things, as well--like air perhaps?
Why should we set limits on CO2 when evidence does not support that it is damaging?
Afterall conservation is a root of conservatism.
What exactly are you suggesting gets "conserved" with the proposed global warming legislation and treaty?
Man--what happened to the fearless truth-tellers in this country! All I see is a bunch of white-flag surrenders, willing to settle for 'just a little bit better' than pure socialism. If you'd spend less time trying to sell conservatives on accepting this nonsense and more time broadcasting that Al Gore's ice-sheets are made of styrofoam, maybe we'd have a chance at exposing this hoax. In spite of the white-flag syndrome, it seems most people ARE getting it!
Americans Cool to Global Warming Action, New Poll Finds
March 20, 2008
Nearly Half Wouldn't Be Willing to Pay Even a Penny More for Gasoline; Opposition to Taxes Especially Strong Among Minorities
Washington, D.C.: Forty-eight percent of Americans are unwilling to spend even a penny more in gasoline taxes to help reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new nationwide survey released today by the National Center for Public Policy Research.
(snip)
I have no problem with setting reasonable emission decreases especially if it is done over 40+ years - if thats what it takes to take the issue off the table. Losing to Obama is not an option.
So, it doesn't matter to you if we ruin the U.S. economy for years to come--causing TRILLIONS in damage, subjects us to international laws, and restricts our freedoms, as long as John McCain becomes Presdient?
Your idea of "winning" sucks!
Conservatives ARE conservationists. What they are not is Marxists who want to take private property out of the hands of citizens. What they are not is internationalists are happy having the UN set laws we have to abide to or subject us to taxation and regulation. What they are not is blind to the socialist objective of using global "climate change" to effect the largest wealth redistribution scheme in all of modern history. I'm sorry--but you are looking like a "useful idiot" on this subject, and I don't mean "idiot" by Webster's definition.

How bad do things have to be for the GOP to be trying hard to out-liberal the two most liberal candidates to run for office in decades?
