Did you know that in the book that Dorothy wore silver shoes not ruby slippers?
They were changed so that they'd so up better in Color in Oz.

Also, in the book, all four witches were mentioned, but in the film North and South were combined into Glinda.

I read an interesting story about the Wizard of Oz. It has something to do with the silver standard around the time the book was written and Williams Jennings Bryan. In the book, the ruby slippers were actually silver. The word Oz is supposed to be the abbreviation for ounces, which was how gold and silver was weighed. The Wicked Witch of the East had to do with the big East corporate moguls who were pushing the silver idea to be used as currency, I think. The scare crow is supposed to be symbolic of agricultural interests. And so on, and so on.
If you want to read more, you can do a Google Search and type in the Wizard of Oz.
