Interesting reason why people support Obama...
Real Clear Politics ^ | May 13, 2008 | Stephen Marks

Posted on 05/13/2008 8:07:04 AM PDT by Ooh-Ah

GOP consultant Stephen Marks, on going negative against Obama: "Here's the problem, I've been doing negative politics all my life. ... But this is the first candidate that I've seen that nothing negative is sticking. And I'll tell you why. ... His white supporters, as you know, they're young people, and they are middle-class and upper-middle class wealthier white folks, and nothing appeals to them. They're getting something from Barack Obama that they've never gotten from any other candidate before. They're getting moral superiority, they're getting self-esteem. ... I'm serious."

Obama is truly a religion.

I will bet that the northerners and cafeteria Catholics go for this guy far more than “Bible Belt” types.

In the south, we hear preachers all the time talking like this. But many libs never really have been in a church, have heard someone talking authoritatively about hope and happiness and love.

This is new to them. It’s religion without Jesus. They are very vulnerable to this. They BELIEVE in Obama salvation.

Thank you for this thread! I saw him this morning on Fox and couldn’t remember his name. Marks said that Barry’s speech of a few years ago mentioning the Book of Deuteronomy would be very insulting to Christians. Quite a contrast to his Sermon on the Mount speech of today. When the Friends asked if something could harm Barry, Marks said that he would use this. He seemed to think it was too late, though. However, Gretchen said—well, it’s out now!

Smug, moral superiority is a hallmark of liberals. That's nothing new. But I don't see how Obama provides self esteem, outside of the sense of moral superiority that he projects.

The reason why nothing negative sticks to Obama is because he presents himself as a platitude-speaking cipher, upon whom people can project their own hopes, dreams and ideas.

Obama is whatever I want him to be, and nothing he says contradicts that, since he never says anything substantial.

It is precisely for that reason that McCain should nominate a black conservative for VP

I disagree. He needs a conservative, it is true, but I think she should be female. McCain could choose Al Sharpton, and he still wouldn't get 10% of the black vote. However, there are a lot of soft-headed white moderates who want to cast a "historic" vote, so in years to come they can brag to their grandchildren about how caring and open-minded they were. We give them a lady to vote in as VP, and we pick up a lot of votes.

In particular, there's one large group of swing voters that is unhappy with the way the whole Obama thing has shaken out. These are the middle-aged and older women who got into the periphery of the feminist orbit back in the 60's and 70's. They don't see themselves as bra-burning lesbians, and in fact many of them are now grandmas. But they have seen the experienced older woman train the callow young male go-getter, and then lose the promotion to him, and they just don't think it's fair. They would have happily voted for Clinton, but now they are sulking, and ripe for us to pick off.

I propose Sarah Palin of Alaska.

“They're getting moral superiority, they're getting self-esteem....”

Well, if you don't get it at home-you go looking for it. Pathetic, though, that it has to be packaged and sold to you like any other trendy fad or ‘in today-out tomorrow’ commodity. And of course, that is just about how enduring, significant and valuable ‘moral superiority and self-esteem’ are to these clowns.

They support him because he’s black (not that that is racist on their part.)

I agree with you 100% on the VP, but I’d bet my next paycheck that it’s going to be some boring white guy (BWG). I’m no bean counter, but we do have talent on the right beyond the usual BWG line up. I think it would go a long way to winning this thing if McCain would think outside the bgox on the VP choice.

Show me an Obama supporter and I will show you a smug, self righteous, idiotic, navel gazing, jackass.

Republicans and conservatives will make mistakes unless they understand what is going on here.

And you're still not understanding. It's about liberty. Obama was going nowhere until the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act was passed by Republicans. There are 20 million online poker players in America. The majority are, or were, Republican senior citizens...people who enjoy a couple of hours of poker for a buck.

Those are Obama's contributors and they will be voting for him in November.

We'll see how it works out in November. But it shouldn't even be close. The only reason Dems are in the game is negative blowback from the unpopularity of the war.

Perhaps your poker player demographic theory will show up for Hillary in today's primary in West Virginia.

But you're forgetting that Obama is carrying the skank and bimbo vote among 20-somethings.

And that kind of thinking is the reason the Dems will win a landslide in November.

The economy and the lack of any conservative leader to emerge as a viable presidential candidate have something to do with it. But the Obama thing is a cult. And the followers are goofy.

It looks doubtful that the Republicans will come up with the necessary stimulus for the economy or a coherent policy for Iraq. But the high negatives of the administration put Hillary and Obama in the game.

Either candidate could blow it with gaffes. It's a silly season this year. Strange karma. Anything could happen.

They should let Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry give speeches at the convention. Just for the comic relief.

What/whose votes will be won by McCain putting a black conservative on the ticket?

Historically, it’s called a “cult of personality”.
Usually a lot of people die when their leader gets elected.
