Last time I checked, American citizens can travel freely back and forth between the border. If that’s the case, then why the high tear jerk drama through the fence? Why not just cross the border and visit grandma? Could it be that the Menchaca’s are illegals? The article conveniently doesn’t specify.

Depending on how she’s trying to become legal, she may *not* be able to cross back into Mexico even for a visit. My wife used to work as a secretary for an immigration lawyer processing L-1 and similar types of visas, and permanent residency. There were situations during the paperwork processing where the visaholders were not allowed to leave the country, period, or their applications would get shot down. Why, I don’t know, but those were the rules.

Our immigration laws in this country are totally wrecked. It’s sheer hell for a motivated person who wants to become an American to gain a visa, residency, or citizenship, but we welcome illegal invaders across the border by the millions. It’s Bizarro World.
