That depends on the definition of "socialist". If you define it, as it is usually done, in economic terms, they were neither left nor right. The Nazis' purely
economic policies were more or less centrist, maybe with a slight slant towards the left. Trying to fit the Nazis on one-dimensional left-right-scale is inevitably doomed to fail. The point about the Nazis is that they were other things: racist, volkist, totalitarian, militarist, nationalist etc..
