An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).
Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

Chinese army is moving to the center of the earthquake area, and premier Wen Jiabao being with the relief force.
Unfortunately,Sichuan Province is a mountain area, and the roads are destroyed. While weather is also terrible, airforce can’t drop army to the area directly, they can only drop supplies to the area.
Since the roads are destroyed, and bad weather forbiden the airforce, relief team run to the site by feet.
this night (gmt+8),no matter whether the weather become better or not, airforce will drop paratroop to the site.
Hope more people will be saved

I want to let the chinese that are really here for support know that I am sorry for being so rude, and crass during this time. Now I do not like the CCP at all and belive in democracy for everyone. I feel angry and jaded at the world at this moment in my life because someone really close to me in my family died a few weeks ago. I have had a rough year and can be very snappy and mean at times. I do apologize and my prayers go out to all the innocents lost. I was just thinking about this last night about my family and my loss and thought I would say sorry.

This is not a natural disaster - this is done by humans Distress turns to anger at Chinese soldiers and officials over the response to the huge earthquake http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/may/13/china.naturaldisasters3?gusrc=rss&feed=networkfront The distraught couples neighbour, still half-hoping for a sight of her daughter, burst out angrily: Why isnt there money to build a good school for our kids? Chinese officials are too corrupt and bad. These buildings outside have been here for 20 years and didnt collapse - the school was only 10 years old. They took the money from investment, so they took the lives of hundreds of kids. They have money for prostitutes and second wives but they dont have money for our children. This is not a natural disaster - this is done by humans. That's why chinese hate some western media because which are used to report with heavy bias, mostly by blaming someone or some gov, ignoring the positive things and concerning the negative ones. it is a natural disaster. With a 7.9 earthquake any building could collapse, especially in a mountain province which rarely meet earthquake. And not only school but also other more buildings collapsed, not only children but also more adults died.So i really wanna say shut up to those media with disgraceful political purpose. we need help and comity, not some irresponsible imagination which would only cause censure and chaos in china or enmity from foreign country.

Thanks for all the pictures. I cannot find anything about this disaster on our TV news. This is so sad. I have been in tears, especially over all the children that have been injured.

BeiChang is/was a beautiful city, Communion. It sort of reminds me of what I pictured the fictitious city "Shangri-La" would look like from the book "Lost Horizon."

Dont feel bad the guardian hates the US more than anyone.

You're right. It's time to get the earthquake kit refreshed.
USGS Dr. Lucy Jones just appeared on GMA explaining that the shockwaves in Chengdu registered 7.0 which would collapse most older buildings and also damage some newer buildings.
