An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

Earthquake Ping list. I'm sorry I've been gone all day. I'm trying to catch up now before sleep.

Zhanli from your link I found this photo. It made me cry too. I hope that he was able to be rescued safely.

Yes, I was very surprise, too. Not only Beijing, Tailand’s capital Bangkok and Vietnam’s Capital Hanoi also felt the quake. 1/3 of the Eurasia mainland could feel it, really unbelievable!

up to 1,000 miles away it could be felt.

I believe it after the small 5.2 we had here in the midwest (Illinois Wabash Valley) a couple weeks ago. It could be felt as far as 400+ miles away.

My sympathies run deep for those afflicted by the horrible earthquake in China. Having been a news director during the 1989 Loma Prieta quake in Watsonville, CA, I have seen quake carnage firsthand.

The drama being played out in China this very moment is one of bravery and sorrow. In the days to come we will hear great stories of heroism and tales of unbearable misery.

China is a great land filled with a great people with a long history. Any assistance our country can give to alleviate the suffering, no matter how small, should be given forthwith. Politics aside, this is a disaster affecting the common man, (and woman), and of course us conservatives here on this forum can easily see the difference between a disagreeable government and the people it governs.

Our heart goes out to those people, the everyman who just toils to put food on the table and a roof over their head.

UPDATE!!!

Nice easy map of the general area... (use this map to locate the following listed areas - all are listed on the map - you may even want to bookmark this map)
http://english.dreams-travel.com/chinaguide/china-map/chengdu-map.jpg

Mianzhu: 1,500 confirmed dead and 10,000 people remained buried in rubble.

Dujiangyan: about 900 teenagers were buried under a collapsed three-story school building. - At a second school in Dujiangyan, fewer than 100 of 420 students survived, Xinhua reported.

Woolong: home to more than 100 giant pandas, whose fate also was not known - Fifteen missing British tourists were believed in that area at the time of the quake and were out of reach.

Shifang: where the quake sparked a major chemical leak of liquid ammonia, about 600 people died and as many as 2,300 remained buried, Xinhua said.

Wenchuan: (very top and at middle of map) Roads are cut off and this is the city closest to the Epicenter. 131,000 reported to live here, only 30,000 reported as ok so far.

Chengdu: Xinhua reported that 60 pandas at another breeding center in Chengdu were safe.

Not on map...

Beichuan: Just east of the epicenter (Wenchuan), 1,000 students and teachers were killed or missing at a collapsed high school in Beichuan county _ a more than six-story building reduced to a pile of rubble about two yards (meters) high, according to Xinhua. The deaths were separate from another leveled school in Dujiangyan where 900 students are feared dead.
The Beichuan school had more than 2,000 students and teachers in three school buildings. The other two buildings collapsed partially, Xinhua said.
It said up to 5,000 people were killed and 80 percent of the buildings had collapsed in Beichuan.

- A 40-car freight train derailed in the quake that included 13 gasoline tankers was still burning Tuesday, the agency said, with no word on casualties.

This translation is much better.
I was told that volunteers (men between 20~50 years old) in Mianyang, a city located near the center of earthquake, are organized and set off to Beichuan on feet for rescue purpose.

p.s.
reports indicate that there are over 7,000 people die in Beichuan now.
