LOS ANGELES, May 11 (Reuters) - Dennis Farina, a former policeman who built a Hollywood career playing detectives, was arrested on Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport for carrying a loaded gun on his way to board a plane, police said.

Farina, 64, told police he brought the .22 caliber, semi-automatic pistol with him on a drive from Arizona to Los Angeles and forgot it was in his briefcase when he tried to pass through airport security, police said in a statement.

He was scheduled to take a United Airlines flight to his home in Chicago.

"Farina was very apologetic and cooperative with officers," police said. "However, he had no apparent authority to carry a concealed weapon at the time of his arrest."

The actor was initially booked on one misdemeanor count of carrying a loaded firearm and bail was set at $25,000. The charge was upgraded later to a felony after police confirmed the gun was not registered, and bail was raised to $35,000.

Farina was a Chicago police officer for nearly 20 years before taking up acting in the 1980s. He has starred in movies such as "Get Shorty" and "Sidewalks of New York" and is perhaps best known in the role of New York Detective Joe Fontana on the popular television crime series, "Law & Order."

According to a live KABC news report @ 6:00 pm (PT), Farina has yet to make bail.

He was arrested 8:00 am (PT) this morning and processed thru the system by 10:00 am (PT).

I wonder what is making the wheels grind so slowly........

I wonder if Dick Wolf will run a show based on this?

Without a doubt.

“Virtually none. Different issues.”

Perhaps for the airplane but not for the rest of the charges. I havta wonder how many times he flew with this firearm and they let it slide because he was a star.

Stupid yes, but no less stupid than the laws prohibiting firearms in places where they are needed.

You mean Ray Luca, and he was my hero. He was soooooo cool! Two of the greatest lines ever uttered on tv came from that show.

1. Luca and Paulie are breaking into a safe, using an orthoscope to watch the tumblers. Ray laughs and says, “This is the greatest thing since bullets.”
2. Frank Holman is testifying against Luca in a criminal trial. The prosecutor says “Describe your relationship with Mr. Luca.” Holman replies, “Well, we used to steal stuff together, but we didn’t have no relationship,” as the courtroom erupts into laughter.

That’s probably why he forgot it. He must have unpacked a couple of .38, a few .45, some 9mm and for good measure a Howitzer cannon. A .22 just wasn’t as noticeable.

I’d be willing to bet this “actor” is against hand guns and is all for gun legislation and regulations.

Didn’t he play Anthony Buono, one of the two cousins who made up the Hillside Strangler duo, in a made for TV movie back in the 80’s?

.22s are an assassin's choice, aren't they? That's what my CCW class instructor called them. He said they work best when placed at the temple or back of the head of the victim, but make inadequate personal protection weapons.

And an ER doctor I know says that they get plenty of LIVE customers with multiple .22 or 9mm gunshot wounds (that survive). Very few .45 victims seem to pull through, though.

Hey, isn't that the guy that Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro beat the crap out of and killed in the Good fellas movie?
