Obama Cool Under Pressure
RCP ^ | May 11th, 2008 | David Ignatius

Posted on 05/11/2008 2:06:28 PM PDT by The_Republican

Barack Obama called himself an "imperfect messenger" in his victory speech in North Carolina last Tuesday. That was a refreshing touch of humility, but it was also a fact. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is far from perfect. But he has demonstrated the most mysterious and precious gift in politics, which is grace under pressure.

Obama has remained "Mr. Cool," even when his campaign seemed to be blowing up around him. He didn't do the politically expedient things: He didn't wear his patriotism on his lapel with an American flag pin; he didn't promptly disown his race-baiting former pastor, Jeremiah Wright; he didn't apologize for comments by his wife Michelle that many Americans found unpatriotic. You can say what you like about the substance of these positions, but the interesting fact is that Obama didn't flinch.

"Yes, we know what's coming. I'm not naive," Obama said in the North Carolina speech. "We've already seen it ... pouncing on every gaffe and association and fake controversy, in the hopes that the media will play along."

That's the message: Attack me; attack my pastor; attack my wife; bring it on. I'm ready.

The past several months have revealed Obama's vulnerabilities, but they've also shown his ability to take a punch. Many whites are furious that he didn't throw Wright overboard sooner, but blacks surely like him all the more for resisting the pressure. And there's an instinctive American fondness for people who don't rat out their friends, even when their friends are creeps. That's why a Wright-based strategy may backfire for the Republicans, just as it did for Hillary Clinton.

Obama has a transcendent ambition: It's part of what gives him the "man of destiny" quality.

Too arrogant to know when he’s in trouble.

The reason he didn’t wear a pin with the flag was that he couldn’t find one with 57, or 58, or 59....no, 60 stars.

Barack Obama called himself an "imperfect messenger"

And that message is what exactly?

Not naive? He is either naive or very calculating. I do not find anything admirable about him, and I find much that is scary about him.

This writer in RCP seems like all the rest of the media--in the tank for Obama.

There are many "need to know" facts about Obama, and a good start is his sponsoring of legislation in the Senate right now to give the UN 78 BILLION OF OUR DOLLARS FOR WORLD POVERTY--that is the same UN that has proven over and over how corrupt, inept and useless it is at accomplishing anything other than taking our money, our rights, our everything, and making them disappear down a sinkhole.

Pray for our country. It is almost past hope when you look at what is seeking to head up the last bastion of western civilization.

he choked bigtime in the ABC debate, immediately started whining and continued for days, then said he wouldn’t be doin’ any more of them debates. Grace under pressure? Does Ignatius think nobody else was paying attention?

toward rage at America and a patriotism that has led blacks to serve in disproportionate numbers in the military”

here’s a interesting take on that from five years ago:

I think we shall see what happens in the debates to make any rash judgments.

Mr. Cool vs Mr. Foam at the Mouth.

McCain is a worse flip-flopper than Kerry, he wants to take on Russia and China, admits he knows nothing about economy, as is a dumb as a brick, and is a major player in the Silverado Savings and Loan scandal with Keating. Only thing worse would have been Hillary.

Should be interesting!!

Don’t know who this author is talking about. The Obama I’ve seen flinches, fumbles, stumbles, panics, whines, cowers, dissembles and pouts.

About as cool as Potsie Weber.

Cool under pressure?

What world do these people live in? The man can't breath without embarrassing himself.

I’ve seen Obama and McCain in debates.

Obama is lost without a teleprompter. McCain does well.

Biggest advantage Obama has is the media and third party money.

RCP drank the koolaid; I've noticed a continued charge to the middle/left in their content.

“Obama has remained “Mr. Cool,” even when his campaign seemed to be blowing up around him.”

I have to disagree with the article here. Most of Barry’s counterattack speeches have come off (to me, anyway) as a fit of pique. IMHO, Hillary was MUCH tougher (if only for her complete lack of shame and conscience) and cooler under the spotlight.

...he didn't promptly disown his race-baiting former pastor, Jeremiah Wright...

True, he didn't do it promptly. First he gave a speech where he said he could no more disown him than he could disown his poor racist granny.

Then he disowned him.

Ohferpetesake, the minute this guy is asked something that isn't in his stump speech he starts whining like a 6 year old boy and then his surrogates come out and call every one a racist. That's not cool.

go back over the connection of Silverado to the Keating five, then you can go on to demonstrate how McCain was a major player rather than the “token Republican” that the Democrats had to drag in.

Has anyone seen granny lately?

I don’t recall ever seeing granny. It was strange how little interest the media had in her reaction. She was just a useful character in one of his speeches.

Yes, Obama is cool under pressure. But can he make major, sound decisions promptly under pressure?

Again, neither Obama or Clinton have what it takes to be Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, in my opinion. That's why I'm voting for McCain.
