Migden hits stump in tough re-election bid

San Francisco state Sen. Carole Migden is making the rounds, spending her evenings shaking hands, chatting with voters and asking for their support as she fights to hang on to her political career.

Such campaigning is routine for many officeholders, but for Migden, never known as a backslapping pol, it shows how seriously she's taking her June 3 Democratic primary showdown with San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno and former San Rafael Assemblyman Joe Nation.

In a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans 55 percent to 16 percent, the winner of the Democratic primary will probably be a shoo-in in November's general election, which means Migden has three weeks left to make her case for re-election.

"I've enjoyed being out more and meeting real people, and that's a message I take to heart," she said in a recent interview. "I'm not making apologies, but I could have been out more, I recognize that."

The 59-year-old Migden, who has been in political office since she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1990, has plenty of fences to mend if she wants another four years in her Third Senate District seat, which includes half of San Francisco, Marin County and Sonoma County north to Rohnert Park.

In August, she pleaded no contest to misdemeanor reckless driving after a wild, 30-mile ride down Interstate 80, weaving through traffic, bouncing off the center divider and finally rear-ending a car. In March, she agreed to pay a record $350,000 fine to the state for campaign finance violations that included personal use of campaign funds.

Migden argued that many of the violations were the result of sloppy bookkeeping and that her campaign had reported many of the violations to the Fair Political Practices Commission. She also won a legal battle against the politicalwatchdog agency...

Under Migden the CA State Board of Equilization made the Gestapo look like boy-scouts.
