Half a mile wide? That’s an F5 - like Jasper.Maybe. A few years ago I stood and watched a tornado that got to 3/4 mile wide pass within about a mile and a half of me...it was later rated a borderline F3/F4 based on damage, but I don't know if it hit any structures solid enough to test an F5 rating.

Actually according to CNN, apparently the tornado I saw got to 1.5 miles wide...either way it was one huge tornado. It looked like the tornado from the final scene in the movie Twister from where I was standing.
