Alas, no basement. I’m trying to talk my parents into moving here, and that’s one of Mom’s requirements. :)

I’ve got a good cellar, and three bathrooms with no windows in case we have to hide out. We rarely get those windstorms here where I live but 15 miles away where my son and his family live, they had a big storm that broke a window and blew in all kinds of stuff. Ruined some furniture. They spent a couple of hours in the cellar. It’s scary.

Democrats are waiting to blame the tornadoes on global warming and the lack of National Guard help on the war in Iraq.

Barack Obama is waiting to say another 10,000 people died because of tornadoes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc_WKBymCEY

I have lived several places and he is the best.

On top of being a great weatherman, he is a great person too. We are blessed to have him.

I have relatives living in Picher and S. W. Missouri a sister in Seneca. I haven’t heard from them so I guess they are ok.

I am from that area and now I live in South Carolina.

What a ride!

Best Regards,
Bullfrog

I’m not sure where Calhoun is, but nothing but light rain has hit Atlanta yet.

Calhoun is listed in the tornado watch, along with my city, though.

Our hourly forecast seems to indicate it will start hitting here heavily at 4 am. Good thing I’m a night owl.

What part of NY are you in? I grew up in the Albany area and I remember 1 tornado in the 60’s that hit the buildings on either side of my Dad’s business but left his virtually untouched. That was in Schenectady.

Half a mile wide? That’s an F5 - like Jasper.

Maybe. A few years ago I stood and watched a tornado that got to 3/4 mile wide pass within about a mile and a half of me...it was later rated a borderline F3/F4 based on damage, but I don't know if it hit any structures solid enough to test an F5 rating.

Perhaps you should call them? Could be their phones are out, if not, I’m sure you’d feel better to know they are ok. Both of those areas were hard hit.

This is one of the most ominous looking radars I have seen in quite some time.

Gratefully, there are no reports of damage in AL yet. They are saying, however, that much energy was built up today and the air is very unstable. They are reporting that the lightning strikes are frequent and intense.

I will be signing off since the TV is now on live. I need to get a few more things done before I “try” to head off to sleep.

Actually according to CNN, apparently the tornado I saw got to 1.5 miles wide...either way it was one huge tornado. It looked like the tornado from the final scene in the movie Twister from where I was standing.

Here's the photo CNN has from the tornado I saw:
