A lot of conservatives are nervous about McCain. For the time being, they are reulctantly supporting him, but he has to do more to win them over.

(Karl Marx supported free trade. Does that make him a free market conservative?)

Why does he have to “win them over”? Maybe a few will stay home but where else are we going?

In the past ten years the average Republican Senator has voted with the majority of his Republican collegues 87.15% of the time. McCain has supported the Republican position 82.5% of the time. He has departed from Republican orthodoxy roughly 5% more often than his average peer. Included in that 5% are his votes against pork, excessive spending, wasteful programs, etc. He’s not really that much of a maverick.

When is he going to make a serious effort to reach out to conservatives? How about promising to appoint strict constructionist judges? How about re-assurances on gun ownership rights? What about reducing the out-of-control spending of this administation? Does he take conservative support for granted? Does he even want them?
Are you kidding me?? And even on gun rights he has made accomodations to the right.
