He won with 48% on election night. Republicans are generally undercounted in public opinion polls and the Dem candidate has always led the generic ballot poll. Coming out of his convention in 1988, Michael Dukakis had a 15 point polling advantage. On election night, Bush won going away 53%-46%. Neither Obama nor Hillary is going to do better than Democratic presidential candidates have done for decades so to beat McCain they will seek to make the election a referendum on the hugely unpopular Bush.
