Sacramento, CA (AP) -- Sacramento mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson upset local gay and lesbian leaders after saying he believes marriage is between a man and a woman.
The former NBA star made the statement in response to a question during a candidate debate this week.
Gretchen Bender, vice president of the Sacramento County Board of Education, says Johnson's statement shows that he is not ready to lead the city.
Bender and a half-dozen other gay and lesbian leaders held a news conference to express their concern about the former Phoenix Suns star.

Must be a friend of Pastor Hutcherson, here in the Seattle area....you go!!! Letting a minority group run our lives is sooooo 90’s.
Yea, you know, because of course he’s not ready to lead a city with that opinion! /s
I hope he sticks to his guns.
This is remarkable. Imagine stating something that is so obvious and normal, and then get ripped because of said statement.
Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable.
No, Gretchen, I think this proves that Kevin Johnson IS ready to lead your city.
By the way, Gretchen, your position as vice prez of the local board of indoctrination and as a gay/lesbian rights advocate speaks volumes to me why Californica is the last place I want to be. Unless your citizens elect a few more leaders of substance who have moral standards and no need to pander to the pervert vote.
DOH! Off to rehab, sensitivity training and gay boot camp for him.
Oooo, and I just re-read... Sad for Sacramento that they’ve got a woman like that on their board of education. Scary.
doubleplus ungood crimethink rectify
So I guess no Catholics, Muslims, Evangelicals or Orthodox Jews are fit for office in Sacramento? Maybe they should change its name.
I happen to think that many black men have strong character and leadership abilities.......I know I am stereotyping but when its true it has to be said....

Really? He made an honest and HISTORICALLY accurate statement, one that a vast majority of American citizens agree with and that makes him not ready to lead a city?
What I think his statement shows is he is not a victim of the foolish and dangerous political correctness that is doing so much harm to America. But then thats just me........
Sorta sad when they gay community doesn’t get it. He supports civil unions and benefits but because his religion does not support an actual marriage between same sex partners he should be penalized? I guess equality, which would include freedom of religion, doesn’t register to the gays. Well it does, but only in a “gay way”
My brothers gay and lives in the sacramanto valley and he’s voting for this guy. I wonder if that means he’s really not gay. I gotta go check.
Homosexuals need to keep in mind, however, that the good news of the gospel is not about how God despises same-sex sexual relationships. In fact, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 indicates that certain members of that church had been slaves to such relationships but had been cleansed in Jesus' name. So these former homosexuals had evidently repented and accepted God's grace to straighten their lives out.
John 3:16
Revelation 3:20
I don't know this Phoenix celebrity basketball star and I generally don't think much of celebrities taking short-cuts into public policy through politics, but the attack on this person has been "over the top" in intensity!!!
You’re preaching to the choir.
Believing that marriage is between a man and woman makes you unqualified to lead? Baffling. Kevin Johnson certainly demonstrated leadership on the basketball court. How that translates to other fields I'm not sure.
I’m not so sure about that. Did he not expect his past to come out when he stepped into the ring?
Thanks for the feedback. That has crossed my mind.
But not only do some Freepers evidently appreciate being reminded about the referenced passages, even though there are many people in FR who understand the depravity of homosexuality, it is still a mixed crowd.
Trust me, EVERY board of education has a fag on it. But the real problem is that the Fag lobby has conned all the soccer moms, CEOs and all the other people who want to be "fair" into believing its no different than having different preferences in fruit. Bad example, probably.
And yeah, I said fag. Now who is going to make me go to rehab? (you better be packing some heat)
