If the panel was controlled by Democrats I admit I’m pretty shocked.

Hardly. If everyone on either side of the aisle who has "dallied" with persons not their spouses be tossed out due to "ethics" charges, I daresay, D.C. would be empty.

Imagine all of the "high/low priced call girls coming forward to report that they had been "escorts" with Senator.... or Representative.... or any other division of our federal government, for that matter.

D.C. is a cesspool and most decent people soon tire of it and head back home.
