LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif. — A coyote grabbed a 2-year-old girl by the head and tried to drag her from the front yard of her mountain home in the third incident of a coyote threatening a small child in Southern California in five days, authorities said.

The coyote attacked the girl around noon Tuesday when her mother, Melissa Rowley, went inside the home for a moment to put away a camera, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in an incident report.

Rowley came out of the house and saw the coyote dragging her daughter towards a street. She ran towards her daughter, and the animal released the girl and ran away, said sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire.

I took the Troop camping into a DuPage (IL) County Forest Preserve a while ago. Very quiet after the sun fell, which was early as it was in early spring. About 2:00 AM a fire truck went by, with it’s siren on. The siren was answered by what sounded like about 6 coyotes for a few minutes, and I doubt they were more than three hundred yards away.

These guys are also very very very good when it comes to Coyotes. The Norwegian Elkhound seems to have an innate desire to hunt and kill them. If you have one of these in your yard you will not have any Coyotes or other large game around. You do have to brush them daily, however their coats are almost odorless.

It is scary but I’m not talking about leaving them alone. I’m just saying that to beat up on a mom that may have just turned her back for a few seconds just seems harsh.

With the dog there, the coyote would never have come by in the first place, and you’d never see it. Which is an even better reason to have one, but it should be at least 50 pounds.

Those dogs...my BIL gave us one...he never gives stuff away...I told my husband....nah..he's my brother.

That dog ate the heads off my chickens, went thru the screened window to try to get to a guina pig and chased a rabbit into the house one day. Fur was flying everywhere. He went to a new home real fast.

I did read it. Knowing most parents though..she must have thought the child was in a safe area and not expecting wolves. We must do everything we can to keep our kids safe but we shouldn’t bubble wrap them either though.

Maybe I should of added “they need proper training as puppies”. We had one as a child. I can vouch for their protective nature, sociability and absolute hatred of Coyotes. Sadly a screened window will not stop them if they spot their prey. ;-(

“I did read it.”

Ok...if you read this:

“went inside the home for a moment”

why did you say this:

“turned her back for a few seconds”

These two things arent even close to being the same thing...

“Knowing most parents though..she must have thought the child was in a safe area and not expecting wolves.”

Clearly...and clearly...she was quite wrong...her child was NOT in a safe area.

“We must do everything we can to keep our kids safe but we shouldn’t bubble wrap them either though.”

I didnt say that...I said she was wrong to leave her child alone..outside...

Not sure why you wish to argue the point when the result is clear....her child was attacked by a coyote because her child was beyond her direct supervision while she went in the house.

It would add insult to injury...but she could be brought up on charges of reckless endangerment.

You dont leave a two year old outside alone...even for a second.

Considering that coyote attacks had already happened twice before in the past few days...

“Young children don’t leave your site for a moment unless they are in the house and it’s child proofed.”

In the last three days in my neck of the woods there was one mom who went into the kitchen to “get a soda” and her baby died in the bathtub. Another toddler was rescued by a firefighter from a burning apartment and into the hands of mom who had “stepped outside for a minute”.

And take it from me - no house is child proof! (I was a kid, and I’ve seen what MY kids were able to get into!)

That’s one beautiful dog you got there. We had one like her about 20 years ago, never bit anyone but everyone was scared she might. They understand how to intimidate without resorting to violence.

I hope to god that doesn’t happen. (I have two toddlers myself.)

For myself and my baby girl, praying to God and staying armed/aware keeps the fear of all predators minimal...

yeppers ladies, 'childproofing' around here is making sure those dangers that quickly maim and kill are put up, other than that baby Victoria [1 1/2] has learned, and looks forward to correction when little fingers wander towards no-nos...

got her first skinned knees last weekend, unnavoidable unless shes carried around and bubble wrapped...
