If you look at my posts, it is clear that I hate McCain and won’t vote for him (please, no need to debate on that on THIS thread). But, I don’t see what is wrong with a candidate doing ads in Spanish. The fact is that there are millions of voters whose primary language is Spanish, and it is silly NOT to do ads that they can understand.
To: ElkGroveDan
This is enough to(almost) keep me from voting for him.
Maybe he should just stop speaking English altogether.

The fact is that there are millions of voters whose primary language is Spanish, and it is silly NOT to do ads that they can understand. The ones who have businesses or have any shred of any chance of voting for a Republican ALREADY UNDERSTAND ENGLISH!!!
The ones who don't understand English are not even voters.

Well that’s hardly comparable to a United States Presidential candidate speaking to voters in Spanish.

John McCain can put his campaign ads in Ebonics..I don’t care, I will be voting for John McCain, because he is the ONLY one in the race who is an American Hero, who has been tested and proven , and who has served this country. John McCain supports our military, and I support John McCain because he is the best choice as Commander and Chief, and I want the best leader for our troops.

Pretty clear now that McCain has completely given up the conservative base. So he may as well carry on with his well known propensity for illegal alien ass kissing.
Nothing more for this fool to lose.
That is, other than the very considerable number of (I)s and (D)s who agree with conservatives on illegal alien issues.

The ad follows the Cinco de Mayo announcement of John McCain's participation in the La Raza Annual Convention in San Diego on July 14, 2008 and the release of John McCain's Spanish "Estamos Unidos" website, www.johnmccain/espanol.
Plain stupido. It would be one thing if the McCain campaign simply put out an ad directed to Americans whose primary language is Spanish; it's another thing altogether when one considers McCain's participation in a La Raza event--that isn't to brush aside McCain-Kennedy, either.

I dont see what is wrong with a candidate doing ads in Spanish...it is silly NOT to... I agree. I am also no McCain fan.
However, he should be careful about tone control in these ads, or it will wind up sounding like he's pandering.
Quoting from the article: "John McCain recognizes the role that Latino small businesses and entrepreneurs play in our country's economic success in an ever-changing global marketplace," said former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin.
The ads, even if they are in Spanish, should refer to "small businesses", not "Latino small businesses". Talk to people as if they are fellow Americans, even (or especially) if you are talking to them in Spanish or Tagalog or whatever. Be straight up. Don't pander.
I remember when Bush was running the first time. He had a meeting with hispanics in which he tried during at least part of the meeting to talk in Spanish (not well, but he tried). Someone asked him, what will you do for hispanics as president? And his answer was, more or less, "nothing". He was going to try to make things better for Americans, period, not because they were or were not hispanics, but because they were Americans. I thought it was a good answer; he had a perfect chance to pander and he didn't. I disagree with Bush's immigration policies, which do sometimes strike me as pandering, but at least on that day, he did it right.
So, yes, there is nothing wrong with reaching out in Spanish, Chinese, arabic, whatever if it seems right. But give the same message you would give to any other American.

The fact is this is the United States and english is the predominant language and has been since the inception of the country. It's another sign people who come to this country have no intention of assimilating to American culture and expect Americans to assimilate to their culture. Speaking their native tongue only encourages them not to assimilate and is a sure fire way to destroy a country.
