EDITORIAL: Not there ... yet

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton made it clear Wednesday that she is not going away just because of an underwhelming victory in Indiana and an overwhelming defeat in North Carolina. No surprise there. Resiliency, defiance and a high threshold for shame have been among the defining traits of the Clintons' political life.

"I'm staying in this race until there's a nominee," she told reporters in Shepherdstown, W. Va.

She has every right to stay in the race. There may be an unwritten rule that candidates should drop out and rally around their party nominee when the math becomes implausible, but the Clintons do not always operate within the rules, written or unwritten.

Among the written rules that stand in the way of Clinton's now-longshot bid for the nomination is the disqualification of Michigan and Florida delegations from voting at the Denver convention. The Clinton camp was signaling Wednesday that it would make a last-ditch effort to persuade the Democratic National Committee at the end of this month to seat the delegations from those two primaries, which she claims to have "won," even though Sen. Barack Obama was not on the ballot in Michigan and did not campaign in Florida.

To allow the nomination to be swayed by a retroactive sanctioning of two "nonbinding" elections would be unfair to the Obama campaign and an insult to to all the state parties and voters who played by the rules.

Assuming that effort fails, Clinton's hopes would come down to a revelation or gaffe that might persuade the superdelegates that Obama is unelectable. Is that a reason to stay in the race? Hillary Clinton has poured her heart and soul - and a small chunk of her personal wealth - into this race. She has earned the right to answer that question for herself.
