I have come to question this “known fact” myself. What has been promoted is the idea that most murderers are just the “average Joe” who “snaps” at a crucial moment.

Most murderers have long histories of violence. A lot of murders are the result of a long history of violence against the victim. I don't know exactly how many murders are of the domestic violence type, but if you remove those from the equation, then I very much question the idea that most murders occur as acts of passion, other than the passion for violence itself.
