WOW! "Biggest End of Chemo Party" indeed. Thank you to our new friends, the Millers for including us in this awesome event. Justin Miller was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma two years ago this week. After 15 months of being cancer free, Justin presented with a brain tumor and is currently in treatment again. He is a gorgeous child, a true survivor and just oozes life. Please pray for this special kiddo and his family. We look forward to getting to know them all better. We also had a chance to meet the infamous, and might I add adorable, Hope Halloway and her family. Hope is another little miracle that had Neuroblastoma and is CANCER FREE. We hope to hang out with the Halloway clan as well. We know these families have lots to teach us. Lessons their children have taught them and continue to teach us all. Lessons of what life is really about. Thanks be to God for the lessons we have already learned. You have know idea what life is really about until you are faced with the possibility of your child's death. Ok, now enough about that. We all had a ball and sweet Tuesday even stood on her own two legs and did a little dancing. Could she be any cuter?

How is Tuesday doing you ask?

FANTASTIC!

Life has been so fine since coming home. Tuesday is feeling great, or at least deserves a Daytime Emmy for acting like she feels great. Her past cycle of chemotherapy is notorious for being particularly pukey. Not only did Tuesday not puke, but she managed to eat thru the entire course. Quite a feat for someone who yanked her own NG tube just a couple weeks ago. Ok, so she's eating like a toddler but, um, she IS a toddler so we are cutting her some slack. We have her on an organic diet (always did) with a smattering of McDonald's (gasp!) french fries.

It's been one big love fest around here since coming home. It feels so good to be back together. The girls have slipped right back in to twin-ness and Piper is proving to be quite the little mother hen. She makes sure Tuesday has every creature comfort she may need. Keeping her in Nuk's and blankies and snacks. Tuesday on the other hand spends most of her day trying to get a hold of Piper's new shoes. This is where the love ends. "MINE! MINE! MIIIIIINEEEEE!!!!!!", "NO! MINE SHOES!"

Spencer and Axel are fantastic big brothers and huge helps. And 5. ANd 7. And boys. Need I say more?

So where do we go from here?

Tuesday goes back in to Children's on Sept 29th for her 4th (of 6) round of chemo. If all goes well, we will be in-patient for 4 days. Aunt SuSu will be flying in from Atlanta to help out at home. Still taking things one day at a time. We remain full of hope. We remain ever thankful to a Loving God. We remain, more than ever, so proud to be Tuesday's mom and dad.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading African-American pro-life advocate says presidential candidate Barack Obama continues to mislead the public about his votes on an abortion-infanticide bill. Obama has been tagged over the bill all election, and it involves making sure infants who survive abortions get proper medical care.

Obama voted four times against the bill during his tenure in the Illinois legislature and was the only member of the body to speak against it on the floor.

Denver, CO (LifeNews.com) -- The Denver Post came out against Amendment 48 with an editorial on Monday that challenges the personhood amendment. However, the newspaper gets its facts wrong when it attempts to make the case that scientists say human life begins at implantation, rather than conception.

The amendment would define the beginning of human life as the point of conception and have potential ramifications for abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

"Medical and scientific experts set the start of pregnancy at the point a fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterus," the paper contends.

However, that's not the case.

Dr. Jerome Lejeune, an internationally-known geneticist credited with discovering the cause of Down syndrome, told the U.S. Senate in 1981 that scientists agree human life begins at conception.

"Modern biology teaches us that ancestors are united to their progeny by a continuous material link, for it is from the fertilization of the female cell (the ovum) by the male cell (the spermatozoa) that a new member of the species will emerge," he said.

"Life has a very, very long history but each individual has a very neat beginning: the moment of its conception," the famed scientist added.

Dr. Hymie Gordon, the former chairman of the Department of Genetics at the Mayo Clinic, agrees, and says, "By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception."

A local McCain volunteer called me on Saturday. I thought we were hvg a great conversation and she agreed w/me INCLUDING Sarah Palin on the ticket.

However, I haven't heard a word. I requested bumper stickers. If they are anti-Terri's Fight after all, that would be bad. The lady was probably a Bushbot and didn't like that I said either Bush brother could have pardoned her. Man, Bushbots hold long grudges.

Just as we gasp some fresh air of relief, another assault on humanity steps in. In this thread from Sun, a little child is abused to the point of death. But that is not enough! Perhaps the child has useful parts and gets a coup de grace from the used parts sales department before the baby gets a chance to live.

I try not to get cynical about this, but am anyway.

Haleigh Poutre update...

The fox guards the henhouse, again and again. For those not familiar, this agency, DSS, after enormous blundering in the beginning, failed in an attempt to snuff little Haleigh and ever since has held onto her in jealous ownership like an obsessed lover. Fortunately for the people of Massachusetts, these antics grew too egregious to tolerate when brought to light, and DSS is reined it a bit these days.

Once again, I am grateful to Buffy Spencer of The Republican for keeping the light on this story.

SPRINGFIELD - The state agency that has custody of 14-year-old Haleigh Poutre, the Westfield girl whose case led to a major overhaul of the agency's oversight of child abuse and neglect proceedings, is seeking to keep any of her appearances in court closed to the media.

The request from the Department of Children and Families, formerly called the Department of Social Services, comes in the case of her stepfather, Jason D. Strickland, who was accused with his late wife, Holli A. Strickland, of inflicting the injuries three years ago that left Haleigh with a severe brain injury and the subject of a right-to-die case which drew national attention.

The motion was received by Hampden Superior Court on Friday.

Assistant District Attorney Laurel H. Brandt, the prosecutor in the criminal case against Strickland, said in a court hearing that Haleigh is her principal witness.

Strickland, 32, has pleaded innocent, and is due to face trial on Oct. 30.

The Republican will challenge the state's request, according to Executive Editor Wayne E. Phaneuf.

"This case is of national significance and has already led to changes in the law to protect children who were victimized by the failure of the state agencies to act promptly and properly on their behalf," he said. "At every step of the way, those state agencies have tried to suppress the public knowledge of this case because of their embarrassment. We intend to challenge the request to keep Haleigh Poutre's testimony secret and quash her chance to tell her story."....................

The already difficult debate over whether to sustain the life of a person with almost no consciousness as the result of a brain injury has grown harder over time, says an American bioethicist visiting Halifax this week.

New scientific work has shown that some people who appear to be in a vegetative state, with no prospect of recovery, are in fact minimally conscious, Dr. Joseph Fins, a neurologist and chief of the division of medical ethics at New York’s Weill Cornell Medical College, said Tuesday in an interview.

And recent experimental therapies, including deep-brain stimulation and certain drugs, have helped patients in isolated cases regain some consciousness, he said.

"We are on the cusp of greater and greater discovery," Dr. Fins said. "In a way, when there was absolutely no hope and no possibility of hope 10 years ago, it was almost easier to sort of deal with it. I think we’re now in a more ambiguous situation where there are glimmers of possibility. If you’re unfortunate enough to have a loved one in this situation and you’re hoping against all odds that there might be something to do, it’s hard to be patient."

Dr. Fins will give a free public talk Thursday evening called Lessons From the Injured Brain: Bioethics Meets Neuroscience.

Last year in the journal Nature, Dr. Fins described the case of a 38-year old who’d been in a minimally conscious state for five years and regained the ability to eat, speak and make some movements after electrodes were implanted in his brain. But he stressed that experimental techniques like deep-brain stimulation are unproven and cannot be considered treatments.

"There’s no treatment for this," he said.

The way families of people with minimal consciousness navigate the debate over prolonging life or allowing a loved one to die and their appeals to governments to support research will help accelerate investigations into new treatments, Dr. Fins said.

He said more government funding is needed to broaden the experimental approaches to treatment.

As it stands, people left with minimal consciousness are largely "neglected" by policy-makers, Dr. Fins said.

He and colleagues last year estimated that there are between 100,000 and 200,000 Americans living in a minimally conscious state and about 25,000 who are considered vegetative. But there are no reliable numbers.

"If you really care about this population of patients, you have to count them so that you can engage in responsible health policy planning," Dr. Fins said.

Periodically, cases like that of Terri Schiavo a severely brain-damaged Florida woman at the centre of a family struggle in 2005, garner a great deal of public attention.

Ms. Schiavo died in 2005 after her husband won the right to remove the feeding tube that sustained her for 15 years in a vegetative state. Her parents opposed the move.

Dr. Fins said it’s productive to have that public debate on a large scale.

He noted that the high-profile case of Karen Ann Quinlan in the late 1970s helped establish the now well-entrenched right of a person to die when there is no hope his or her condition will improve........................

OKEECHOBEE (FBW)—Karen Weber, 57, the women at the center of a Terri Schiavo-like dispute, passed away Sept. 17, apparently of “natural causes.”

Joyce Tatro-Manes, of Toledo, Ohio, Karen’s sister, told Florida Baptist Witness that Weber, whose husband Ray Weber recently was awarded temporary guardianship in the case, died at Longwood Regional Hospital in Fort Pierce about 9 p.m. and her funeral was in the Toledo area Sept. 22.

Weber suffered a seizure in November and then a stroke and has been between an Okeechobee nursing home and a hospital. At the center of the dispute between family members was whether she was initially able to make decisions about her own care since her vocal cords were paralyzed when she had the stroke. Ray Weber, Karen’s husband of 34 years, sought to have her feeding tube removed in March and his wife transferred to hospice. Weber’s mother, who maintained at the time that Karen was alert and responsive. indicated she did not believe Karen would want her feeding tube removed and filed for and received an injunction to prevent Ray Weber from proceeding.

The judge in the case also appointed a committee in March to determine whether Weber at that time was competent to make her own medical decisions.

Since that time Weber’s health problems have become more severe and a judge granted Weber’s husband Ray temporary guardianship of her Sept. 3 reversing an earlier decision granting her mother guardianship of her. The hearing determining her competency was postponed, however.

Despite the guardianship order, an injunction the judge issued in March to prohibit the feeding tube’s removal, remained in place, Tatro-Manes said.

“I wanted to let you know that Karen passed away last night of natural causes,” Tatro-Manes’ said in an email.”

Tatro-Manes said Karen Weber had several infections and her blood pressure had dropped in the past several days. The prognosis has not looked good, she said, and their mother, Martha Tatro, 80, had been at her bedside.

“I consider it a huge victory in that there are some causes you have to champion,” Tatro-Manes told the Witness in an interview. “What we wanted was that Karen not be killed by Ray’s hand, but she was taken by God who took her home.”

The attorney representing Martha Tatro, Joseph Rodowicz Jr., in a news release sent to the Witness, issued the following joint statement on behalf of Karen's family members, including her mother, sister, husband and children:

“Karen Weber’s heavenly father called her home to her eternal reward on the evening of Sept. 17, 2008. Her family knows she is in a better place. We look forward to meeting up with her again someday, but until then, she will be greatly missed as she was dearly loved by all of us.”
