Teen charged with murder in baby drowning

A 14-year-old Bridgeton teenager was charged Wednesday with murder for allegedly drowning her newborn child in a public toilet last weekend. According to Cumberland County Prosecutor Ron Casella, the teenager, identified in a complaint by the initials "I.S.," was charged with purposely causing the death of her newborn baby boy during a Cinco de Mayo celebration Sunday at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds, in Millville.

"She was served with a complaint alleging murder. Specifically, she gave birth to the baby in a public toilet, then removed him from the working toilet bowl and placed him in the tank," Casella said Wednesday. The teenager was allegedly hiding the pregnancy from her friends and family prior to the birth, which occurred between 8:15 and 8:30 p.m.

Casella said a friend of the family "suspected" the teenager was pregnant and notified the girl's father after reading about the discovery of the dead newborn. The father then went to the police. After extensive interviews with members of the county's "Mexican community," a joint investigation involving the county prosecutor's office and the Millville Police Department identified the teenager as the mother of the child, Casella said.

He believes the teenager acted alone in giving birth and disposing of her child, but said the investigation is ongoing. "I believe we know who the father is, (but) I'm not commenting on that at this point. There's still more to know," Casella said.

Prosecutors must decide whether to try the teenager as a juvenile or an adult. As a juvenile, the teen could face up to 20 years in prison, and as an adult, she could face between 30 years and life if convicted of murder.

This makes me so sad and so damn angry. Why don’t these people drop off their babies at hospitals. They don’t have to answer any questions!!!!!

Gotta love those “Cinco de Mayo celebrations.” I’m astounded at how many boneheads in the United States celebrate it but haven’t got a clue why. I’ve asked some of them and the best answer I could get is “because it’s Cinco de Mayo.” Most couldn’t tell me what “Cinco de Mayo” translates to in English. Fools.

I’m sorry. I thought it said the baby was drowned during a Cinco de Mayo celebration. My mistake.

It wasn’t enough to leave the baby on the floor or in the trash can? She had to lift up the tank top, drown and conceal her baby. Sounds entirely deliberate to me.

Another baby who a thousand couples would have adopted...

Wouldn’t this be considered a post partum abortion? Interesting how it is considered murder after the baby is born but the day before its just “choice.”

As a juvenile, the teen could face up to 20 years in prison, and as an adult, she could face between 30 years and life if convicted of murder...and yet had she aborted the baby just a few weeks earlier, she would have been seen as a courageous, progressive, liberated young woman by half the country.......

Where’s the father? If he’s over 18, shouldn’t he be charged with something?

It’s just stunning the dichotomy of things. In one article we have a father who gave up his life to save his four-year-old and then this flip side. It’s just...so sad.

Earlier this week there was this story. Similar, but with a much more positive outcome.

There are at least two victims in these cases.

I did some research last month after 2 similar incidents in Texas. The girls who do these horrible murders deny being pregnant to an extent that they appear psychotic. There’s a strong case that they are mentally ill.

The adults should have protected her. She should have been able to depend on them for help. And, I’m afraid that there will be no neat justice - certainly not by treating her as an adult and charging her with murder.

We treat the girls as minors when it comes to marriage, consent and abortion and then we act as though being pregnant imparts some special wisdom and maturity all by itself. While it doesn’t take any special wisdom to know not to kill a child, it does take self control in light of panic and the need to conceal the evidence that what you’ve been denying or consciously aware of.

This is what happens when we desensitize human life.

What have we become as a nation?

“What have we become as a nation?”

A pretty pathetic one.
