Rio Bravo is my favorite John Wayne movie. Walter Brennan is just great in it -- he's good enough that you forget that Ricky Nelson and Angie Dickinson can't act. Dean Martin is also great in it. And The Duke was never better -- Don Siegel even used footage from this movie to illustrate the (fictional) career of J. B. Books in opening scenes of The Shootist.

The Shootist (as I'm sure you know) was his last film, he was in rough shape but really wanted to do this movie.
Word is they had to payoff the doctor so he could pass the psychical or they wouldn't have insurance. They had someone nearby full time with oxygen for him.
