Horror Author Tells Fans to Email NB, Shuts Down Discussion of Anti-military Remarks [Stephen King]
NewsBusters ^

The saga of horror novelist Stephen King's disgraceful comments about America's military took an interesting turn Monday when shortly after instructing visitors to his website to send me a message stating "Hi, Noel—Stephen King says to shut up and I agree," his own message boards were shut down.

This followed the creation of a number of threads by members that wanted to comment about King's remarks.

The cover-story for shutting down the boards came from the Moderator in a thread entitled "Stephen King Insults Soldiers":

I registered to point out to Mr. King that while he has a right to his own opinion, he has no right to his own facts - people who can’t read can’t get into the military. But the webmaster said he (she?) has closed down all posting on all boards and threads until May 12th, as he’s going on vacation.

So - I’ll be back May 12th. There are 3 threads that address this, and most of the posts take Mr. King to task. His fans defend him by saying he contributes books and other stuff to the troops. That doesn’t give him the right to make up lies, though.

"His fans defend him by saying he contributes books and other stuff to the troops."

Why would he give books to people he thinks can't read?

Gee, nice sentiment of "free speech" (but not for thee).

Desposts don't believe in democracy, they only believe in "winning" and getting their way.

I’d like to contribute a small-minded insult aimed at mere authors, but my wife is one. However, she’s got degrees in Chemistry, Ops Research, and ABD Computer Science. She writes well, and writes fiction that poor Mr King would have to return to class to understand. Oh, she was military too. I’ll not talk about my military background - all encompassing areas that I’m afraid Mr King could not understand. If he’d like to match intellects, both she and I will be there. Hope he’s prepared to look foolish.

Stephen King believes his fans to be smarter than the Americans in our military. Why does he offer books on tape for his fans then?

He makes me ashamed to be a fellow Red Sox fan. I read his
book about following the Sox in ‘04 and he kept talking about how enthusiastic he was about the prospects of a President Kerry, etc. HA ha.

The first King book I read was The Stand. I read that my first three days at college. I took that book with me two years later after I left college and enlisted in the Air Force.

One day, I was rereading it while standing alert duty, and an NCO I knew from the flight line asked to borrow it. I put my name, rank and duty section in the front cover, and let him borrow it.

I didn't see the book again for about four years. I got a phone call one day from someone asking for Airman Bob. I identified myself as Sergeant Bob now. He told me that he was a Colonel, a wing commander, and that he had something of mine he was bringing in from Germany.

Two weeks later, the Colonel shows up at the shop, carrying my copy of The Stand. The book is battered - the back is broken, it's being held together with blast tape, and inside, it's been signed by everyone who had the book after me - Airmen, Sergeants, Lieutenants, even a Brigadier General. There were probably thirty names and duty stations in that book.

That book was a prized possession for many years. I wouldn't have traded it for a book signed by King. The men and women who signed that book meant more to me than an author. Unfortunately, my ex-wife tossed it out one day as garbage (we weren't exes then, and that's not why she's an ex).

Too bad we were all so illiterate.

OK King, when are you going to actually write something scary? Until then I would kindly suggest you STFU.

A one-trick pony schlock machine.
Looks like the product of inbreeding.
One Marine is worth 10,000 Kings.

One has to wonder about King’s mind. Who on earth thinks like that anyway? Such vile, wicked, disgusting stuff he writes about... and then he attacks our military? Oh that is right, he is an artist at work (like the dog being starved by an artist) our miiltary is only saving his behind so he can live in a Free country without Terrorist attacks. They are wicked to King. What a joke!

Silly me! (sarcastic look)

I would not put much faith in a man who is so unaware of his surroundings that he won’t get out of the road when a van is bearing down him.

Obviously we are seeing some brain damage show up.

Once upon a time a small country called for help to the United States. They had a communist rebel army which was about to overrun the capital city.

The President of the small country was shocked to find the United States only sent ONE marine.

The President was upset and let the marine know his displesure with the limited help that was sent.

the Marine simply responded, “Is there more than one rebel army?”

Stephen King is used to talking while everybody else just listens. It must come as quite a shock to him to find that not all of his readers wish to swallow every morsel of wisdom he drops into their mouths.
