Man, what do think about the dust up that happened 2 weeks ago when one of Chertof[f]’s assistants said that it isn’t federally illegal for an “undocumented” worker to be here?

No. Unless you mean that U.S. Attorney in NJ (or whatever). That would be DOJ, and and Mukasey.
