Bush Calls on Myanmar to Allow U.S. Cyclone Aid

WASHINGTON — President Bush called on Myanmar's military junta on Tuesday to allow the United States to provide disaster assistance after a devastating cyclone.

The United States has made an initial aid contribution but we want to do a lot more," Bush said in the Oval Office. "We're prepared to move U.S. Navy assets to help find those who have lost their lives, to help find the missing, to help stabilize the situation. But in order to do so, the military junta must allow our disaster assessment teams into the country."

The death toll from Tropical Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, also known as Burma, has soared above 22,000. The storm hit the Southeast Asian country early Saturday with winds of up to 120 mph. Hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless.

"So our message is to the military rulers: let the United States come and help you help the people," Bush said.

The U.S. Navy has three ships in the Gulf of Thailand that could be dispatched to Myanmar if needed. The USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship, as well as two other vessels in its strike group — the USS Juneau and the USS Harper's Ferry — are there preparing to participate in an annual exercise with Thailand naval forces.

Jorge - as in Jorge El Segundo - the 43rd President of the United States, or, as he would leave it, Los Estados Unidos del Norte.

“If the U.S. is desperate to get rid of that money, let’s focus it on our veterans and their families.”

How about returning it to we the tax payers?

Exactly.

To elitist globalists like Jorge, the misery in third world ratholes exceeds in their minds, any interest in suffering Americans.

The people are dying and suffering en masse. The government is more concerned with maintaining their tyrannical rule than helping the people. I applaud the President for continuing to make the effort to help the people of that country, despite their overly regnant leadership.

All threads lead to illegal immigration, then through Terry Schiavo to Elian, and ultimately the Civil War. That’s just the way it is.

Bush wasn't slow to respond to Katrina so please stop perpetuating that lie.

Like in Burma, the thug government of Louisiana also wouldn't allow Bush and the US military to come to the rescue despite the sailors of the USS Iwo Jima braving a hurricane to get to New Orleans.

Only a select few dare to appear on NAFTA threads, and only for drive-by comments.

Eighty percent of Burmese voted against the current government. They are predominantly Buddhist and support the monk's protest against the current government. Unfortunately, the neighboring countries like doing business with the Generals. These same Generals just moved their capital north so they will not be overly inconvenienced by this storm or the protests which are likely to follow. However, many on this forum are as callous as the Generals and either don't give a damn or are in favor of letting these “brown” folks die.

You think another President wouldn’t try to help in a situation like that? Like the President of ... Russia/Germany/China/190 UN countries...sure let them help, why do the US taxpayers always give by far the most $$ no matter what the consequences...I am sick of this BS that we have to do something because of the way the World views us...Frig ‘em and that sotted ignorant desire by the World to steal from the US...screw Bush also, let that little silver spooned Compassionate Fool spend his own $$.
I’m sick of these trustfund babies and their legacy crap!

“Instead of assuming they are all Muslims, why don’t you do a search and find out. “

No need to when someone as wise as you will do it for me.

Oh really?

Why pick Myanmar?

How many other foreign ratholes fall into the same category?

If he wants to play Santa Claus, let him do it with his money, not mine. I have my own charities to support.

As I recall it, Bush, FEMA, the mayor of New Orleans and the Governess of Louisiana were all caught with their pants down and all equally culpable.

Comnsidering the qualifications of the guy Bush appointed to head FEMA (reminiscent of the Harriet Miers attempt on the SCOTUS) Bush leaves a lot to be desired in the brain department.

Funny, just three years ago, the people there were expecting the U.S. Navy to come to free them from the overarching junta:

What does he mean by “allow?” Does he mean “please let us give you some tax dollars” or does he mean “please don't let the emergency assistance rot on the docks because we didn't pay the right bribes like Indonesia did?” It better be #2. I just finished sending my OWN money via World Vision. If he's ponying up my tax dollars as well, I want that money back.
