Further info on the shell revealed it was a naval shell sealed against moisture. They did a good job. Too bad for the guy that picked it up.

Are we talking a round ball, center filled with explosive and a fuse, with two halves sealed? Obviously hand-made; was it a wick-type fuse needing lighting? How’d they light it? Before firing or was it lit during firing?

I wish the TV show, “How It’s Made” - or whatever it’s called, would show it and new ordinance being made. I’d record that and re-watch it, numerous times.

What was he doing that set-it-off? Did he light the fuse? Pry it open? Does the article even say?
I would have hated to be in that guy’s shoes.
