McCain: Focus on illegal immigration hurt GOP's image

PHOENIX (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says the focus on illegal immigration during the Republican primary season harmed his party's image among Hispanics.

Speaking to reporters in Phoenix on Cinco de Mayo, McCain said that Hispanic citizens want America's borders secured and illegal immigrants to be treated humanely.

He says low-income Hispanic citizens are vulnerable to losing their jobs to the lower wages accepted by illegal immigrants.

On the subject of broader immigration policies, McCain says local governments would not have to take on immigration problems had the federal government overhauled the country's immigration policies.

McCain spoke at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport before his flight to North Carolina.

Video... you can watch some of what he actually said.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/05/mccain/#cnnSTCVideo

Still talking *comprehensive* immigration reform (with temp worker programs) and ID cards.

Regarding decision to participate at La Raza conference, he was asked how divisive that decision might be. He responds with “My Party... I will seek the vote of every American... the job I have is to reunite America... I will be the President of *all* the people... I will reach across the aisle... party of Abraham Lincoln... all of us should have equal opportunities in this nation (including illegals, apparently) and I will fight for that.”

I.e. the world in which you’ve drank so much you can’t see straight, you have to “stabilize the room” when you lie down and you puke on yourself... ;-)

Thanks for the link to the video.

Well at least he's gonna do more than Bush has done for the past 7 years.
Secure the border & biometric ID’s.

And that's a hellofalot more than we could ever expect from Clinton or Obama.

I'm just gonna have to do what I've done for the past 20 years and “hold my nose” and vote “R”
The alternative is inconceivable.
A Leftie would pull the troops out of Afghanistan & Iraq
and nominate liberals to the Supremes which would prevent a reversal of Roe for probably another 20 years! If elected, we'll just have to do what we can to turn McCain to the Right on spending, taxes, Gitmo, waterboarding, deportation et al...which would be a lot easier than trying to turn the "D" to the Right. LOL

The only difference I see is Iraq. As to the Supreme Court, I think McCain might be more liberal than Shrillery. McCain is a big-government guy that thinks the govenrment can solve all problems. I think he can spend a whole lot more than the Dems, especially if he can silence his own party. As to other defense issues—I don’t see McCain as any savior. When he calls appropriations for the B-2 “pork,” I lose all respect for him. He’s got a long history to evaluate, not just what he’s been cautiously saying on the campaign trail. I think he’s just as liberal as he was when he ran in 2000 and will destroy the Republican Party if elected.

San Francisco Chronicle. Aug 20, 1999. pg. A.3

JOHN McCAIN: IN HIS OWN WORDS

— On abortion: “I’d love to see a point where (Roe vs. Wade) is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to (undergo) illegal and dangerous operations.” McCain said he would support legislation banning abortions in the third trimester.

— On comments by presidential hopeful Orrin Hatch that the GOP should be proud “we don’t have the gays and lesbians with us”: “That, in no way, reflects the view of the Republicans whose support I seek. I believe we, as the Republican Party, should be the party of Abraham Lincoln.” He said he would “absolutely” support gays and lesbian appointments in his Cabinet and would not discriminate on the basis of race, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.

— On his proposal to expand H-1B visas for high-tech workers: “I am calling for a large-scale expansion of the H-1B program, to make sure that qualified individuals from around the world can come to this country and achieve their own American dream.” McCain added he has heard concerns that Silicon Valley companies are simply refusing to pay sufficient wages to skilled American workers, saying “that ought to be looked at . . . (to see) if this is some kind of high- level sweatshop operation.”

I would like to bring myself to support the Republican candidate, but I’ll be minding my own business and McCain will out of nowhere poke his thumb in my eye. I get the impression he has contempt for me and my views. I’m not exactly itching to vote for McCain.

Yeah, the focus on illegal aliens hurt the GOP image alright--with conservatives who are still enraged at McQueeg's duplicity in partnering with Fat Teddy on the amnesty bill which we chopped to ribbons for him.

McCain is not only not a conservative, he isn't even a decent RINO as RINOs go, but a liberal internationalist and an illegal alien ass-kisser who couldn't care less about border protection and national sovereignty. His positions on Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), international criminal courts and his flacking of a "replacement" for the UN which he refers to as a League of Democracies", show him to be a NWO globalist of the worst possible kind.

Few true conservatives would even consider voting for him. Sometimes, the GOP candidate is so bad he doesn't even cut it on a "least worse" basis. That defines McCain perfectly.

Well all I can go by is the man’s word and more than one time I have heard him say that he would appoint conservative judges...of course, there are no guarantees...if you remember, even RR screwed up on his Supreme court appointments with O’Connor & Kennedy.

They are fools.

About half the country will vote for the dem who promises the most bread and circus tickets.

Conservatives care about principles, not party labels.

The gimme niche market is all sewn up by the dems.

Was it ever really a conservative organization?

Although you may be correct, up until now, it had never strayed so far to the left. The country does NOT need two major political parties on the left. History has proven that.

Every time the current conservative party has strayed from its principles, it's died. The democrat party is protean, able to shift its shape, to tailor its values to current mores and fashions.

Sayonara, GOP.

Absolutely. The open border crowd sure doesn’t. They see them as a commodity for trade while they call US racist! Any human deserves a good wage for a good day’s work. They should all go home a demand it.

And the poo-bahs of Wall Street who love illegal immigration ignore the fact that when these people can vote, they're going to be among the most left-wing democrats.

Oops did not mean to denigrate sailors. Admiral McCain was an honorable man .. I worked directly for him.... sonny boy never leaned from his Father.

McCain is sliding in on a notion of his war heroism.

While MacNutJob sees himself as a jet jockey, most Americans see him for what he is: a liver-spotted, addle-brained, flatulent narcissist. And though I salute his heroism, that meal ticket ran out a long time ago.

Moreover, when his former friends in the MSM get through with him, he'll recall wistfully his treatment at the hands of the Viet Cong.

Sadly, most of the poo-bahs on Wall Street are left wing democrats too (is there another kind?), but I get your point.

MacWhackJob loves, first and foremost, MacWhackJob. Once upon a time, he might have put someone or something else above his narcisstic ambitions, but that was decades and decades ago.

Some of the most fantastic people I have ever met are combat war veterans. Some of the most horrible people I know are combat war veterans. War brings out the worst and the best in men and women. Having been in combat or being captured and having been a POW does not mean that you are anything special. It does mean you served your country. I will give John McCain the credit he deserves. He was honorably discharged from military service in the USA.

Well all I can go by is the man’s word and more than one time I have heard him say that he would appoint conservative judges...

In McCain's case, we know that he thought Bruce Babbitt would make a fine SCOTUS... same for Harriett Miers. He showed no objection to Ginsburg.

Sorry... his word, as recently modified, gives me no more assurance than Arnold telling me he is a "fiscal conservative" and would go to Sacramento and "cut, cut, cut." In fact--even less so as McCain has a long history contradictory to his current rhetoric.

IMO, if McCain does ultimately get the GOP nomination, the race is already lost. Time to work on defense against liberals and I sure don't want McCain as my team leader.

They'll just realign their portfolios to invest in all of the "social justice" and "green technology" businesses.

Is it just me or is McCain purposely trying to throw this election? At this point I have to wonder if he has made some sort of back-room deal with the Libs.

I've suspected that for quite some time now. I think he really doesn't want the job at his age and he's just running so he can write a book and retire.
