You're quite right that it has to be market driven, or it won't work. And the breed registries are probably not the right folks for the job.
There may be a useful analogy in some of the private foundations that have been set up to preserve rare breeds -- whether of chickies, sheep, cows, or antique roses!

“That is not an attack, that is purely a factual observation.”
This is correct. I categorized your assertions with PETA because that's what they advocate.
My basic stance is this - people are good - domestic animals are good - extinction is bad.
PETA stands on the opposite side of that. Is that where you stand?

Yes that is exactly what I was thinking. There had been people holding onto plant collections with the thought of preserving them. Then one day a David Austin comes along, hybridizes the old with the new and reinvents the classic rose. It couldn’t have happened without those holdouts who kept their old cabbage roses in the face of the Hybrid Tea onslaught. The same thing is now happening in animals which is being made possible because of technology.

Texas Rose Rustlers
These folks go to abandoned homesites, graveyards, etc. and take cuttings to preserve the old-fashioned roses.

I found out about the group through an article in
Smithsonian several years ago.
I can't grow roses in very many places on our property, because we live in a hole and there's a lot of shade. But I have one or two spots that work.

Sorry, but you know the old saying, “know your enemies”. I had to shower after visiting that site. Too many hippie cooties (c;
